Apparently to get in-state tuition, you need to have lived 12 months in New York. However, living in campus dorms does not count. Currently I'm signed up to live in the dorms which means if I go through with it, the earliest I could get in-state tuition is my 3rd year. For OOS, it is just recommended that you get off campus housing as soon as possible? The difference between in and out of state tuition seems pretty high (10k-20k). That seems like it adds up to be a lot over 4 years.

However, on the other hand, I wouldn't really be able to check out any places beforehand. I'd just have to go by photos in listings...

And the difference between a dorm and an off-campus apartment can be pretty high too.

Some states won't let you become an in-state resident for tuition purposes if you're attending school at all during those 12 months, so you might want to dig a little deeper than just the housing situation.

Where are you going? If it's somewhere with a lot of apartment complexes you could try apartmentratings for renting sight unseen.

ditch the dorms and find something off campus. though it will be a bit more expensive it will be in a nicer neighborhood than the downstate dorms (i'm assuming they're in the same neighborhood as the school). there are a few things you need to do to get in-state tuition in NY if you are OOS and they aren't that hard (i think they include living off campus and changing your voter registration and possibly your driver's license). fortunately all of the state schools are outside of manhattan so finding off campus housing isn't as big of a deal as it could be. honestly noone should be paying OOS tuition in NY beyond the first year
