lol, if i just spent the time i wasted watching tv for studying instead last yr, i'd be SOOOOOOOOO #1 in my class.. lol 😀

anyway, i wonder if tv is teh worst demise for a medstudent.. i've seen a few (very busy) attendings and they've all told me they dont watch tv.

i think from now on i'm gonna stop watching all the baseball, football, basketball, hockey games and golf tournaments + all the shows and become a gunner... NOT!!! LOL

better yet, be a real core gunner and purchase plasma TV's + cable hookups for all your classmates so *they* slack off. 😀 so that you'll get grand AOA and the high mgh residency in rare-ultra surgery. Haven't you taken Gunner 101?

During clinical rotations trip them in the halls, and spill stuff on their coats. Decommission their charts, and cut slits in their stethoscopes. If anyone asks a fellow student a question, perniciously answer it for them immediately. Reserve your spot in the library 24 hrs/day, by making an igloo out of every useful atlas or manual.

one thing that i have done in the past is tape all of my shows during the week and watch tme on friday night with my husband. it is only about 2 hours with of shows and it is something good to do if you don't go out. that is our time together so i can't see stopping that once med school starts.

Just the opposite...

At least for me, it was a brainless escape that I could use to help me relax before I went to bed. Of course March Madness did cut majorly into my study time.

Some of my best studying was spent in front of the TV.

This is pretty much what Mr DrMom & I do, but during big testing times (which last semester was every week) it gets put off.

I've always considered TV watching an important part of studying. Studying in front of the TV is usually a waste of time, but you must continue to do the activities that you enjoy to do during med school or else your overall mood will suffer. Studying for 24 hrs a day can be very counter-productive if you are miserable. That's why I count TV watching as part of my "study" time, because it's improving the overall productivity of my study time when I do actually study.

I almost always study in front of the TV, but I'm afraid this will have to change next year. 😛

Ok, whatever Superman. I can see including TV into your wellness regime. I can even see preserving it in the name of mental health, but to say it is part of your study-time is just ludicrous  🙄

That said, I agree with you. There comes a certain point where excessive study efforts bring diminishing returns.

tv don't bother me coz i dont watch tv that much, but i spend way too much time in front of the computer, downloading and watching reruns of CSI, smallville and 24.

the internet is way worse a time killer than tv. is anyone else out there with having the same dilemma?

Yep, my response is evidence to this fact.

It is especially hard at my school where we all have wireless connections. I mean, honestly, if the lecture is the least bit boring you know where we'll all be!

I got TIVO, and recorded all the shows I wanted to watch. (Mine stores 80 hours) Then, whenever I took a break, I watched the recorded shows. This way, I got to watch shows I wanted to watch instead of lame infomercials during my precious TV breaks. Also, you can watch shows like 15 minutes at a time. Another thing is you can skip commercials which take up 15-20 minutes for a 1 hour long show.

I used to be much more productive when I studied while watching TV. Seriously. But that ended when I hit my junior year... Of high school...

I hate hate hate TV. I watch too much of it. I didn't have one as a kid, so I've been making up for that ever since. I'm all for throwing my TV out the window, but my s.o., the sports nut, is very unhappy about that proposition. My guess is that TiVo would be great for our purposes, but I refuse to pay the monthly on it. Or at least, it had a monthly when he bought me one two years ago- we returned it. He likes buying me crap that HE thinks is cool, unfortunately 🙄
I'm more practical than that- I dig clothes, socks, books, gym gear...

But back to original question: My guess is that getting rid of your TV would be a fabulous study technique 😀

Oh yeah, about the net: Takes up way too much time. I'll be relinquishing many of my owner and moderator duties on various lists when I start school, and unsubbing from at least half the listservs I'm on. And using Friendster just for friends I already have 😀
