I have heard terrors of things about the oregon program and i don't know if I want to spend the money for a plane ticket out to the school. I have heard they recently lost a lot of funding and the facilites are old. Also it seems the school is really unorganized

I don't know if it is the school for you, but it is definitely worth checking out. The building is old, but the clinic and labs are better than some I've seen. I think the interview process is disorganized, which leads many to believe that the program is also...but the program seems to be as good as any other. You are correct, there was a huge funding cut last year, and OHSU, in my opinion is in a transition. They are very marginally a state institutiton, and is borderline private as far as funding goes. The whole campus is growing rapidly, and the dental school is scheduled for a new building and move after 2011. With all this, I have spoken to enough people to believe that OHSU is more than adequate, if not better clinically than many institutions. I do have some reservations as far as how the admissions process is handled, but not in the program.

My brother is a third year there and he does not like it very much. Most of his classmates that I have talked to all say the same thing. He said that many of the instructors are inadequate and treat them poorly. The amount of work he has to do is ridiculous and excessive. Yes the funding is also very poor because the Oregon school system is going downhill very quickly. I also do not know about the new school because I interviewed there late last year and Mark Mitchell said that he isnt holding his breath that the new building will ever be made.

I am applying there because it is cheap (at least right now for in state) and my brother still goes there. I have a lot of friends and family in Portland but if I get into UoP I would go there in a heartbeat. Maybe I am slightly bitter that they havent given me an interview yet, but from what I have heard from current students they do not like it very much. It is all up to you if you want to go. If you have the money you might as well check it out but it is up to you.

Hey ducks, no interview for me yet either. Maybe it is an out-of-state thing. I'm holding out for UOP too...oh the dream. But I'm trying to be postive as I haven't yet decided if the cheapness of OHSU is enough to turn down another school. ???? I dunno.😕

Most people say that there are good things and bad things about every school (except UoP, everyone seems to like it there), but Im sure OHSU is just like any other school. The funding is thing that I worry about. My high school in Oregon had to go only 4 days a week because the serious lack of funding. I think my tuition at UofO went up every year. Needless to say I have no faith in the Oregon Education System. Good luck with getting an interview. I would just go to other interviews and see the vibe you get and if it is good enough to counteract some of the uncertanties of OHSU then I say go for it, but as of right now it is pretty cheap.

I know, price is a huge factor for me. Right now it is only $18K or so. I expect it to go up quite a bit. But if it is going to go up 10K, I really starts to narrow the gap between private schools. I just hate to be in my 4th year and paying 30K when I picked the school for money sake. I guess in the long run it doesn't matter so much...DMD is what counts. Thanks for the perspective ducks.

4 days a week, are you serious? How do the kids learn anything?

We went longer days, so we actually only lost about 2 hours of actual class time. It was nice having 3 day weekends every week 🙂 .

Hey no problem lemming. Overall I think OHSU is a good school but definately has some issues it needs to sort out. It might be a gamble with the cost but you will definately be a good dentist, and OHSU may end up being as much as a private school but at least there is the possibility that it may not.

For what it is worth Oregon has done this budget crisis thing every year for the last 4 years. Last summer the website even read "$27k" for tuition for about a week. The school postures and the government usually gives in and ups their budget. There is of course no guarantee of this being the case every year.

I would have Oregon as my number 1 just because of the tuition and Portland's Beer Fest but my low math ruined my chances.
