Is passion for biology implied? (personal statement)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Im trying to cut down on my personal statement and take out the parts that don't seem as relevant to the flow and theme of my personal statement and I keep looking at the paragraph on how I found my passion for biology.

I think its important but at the same time i wonder, Is it implied?

One of my recommendation letters comes from a biology professor and another from a biology research lab.

However I dont reallly explain why in my own words anywhere in my app otherwise. Should I just find somewhere else to cut?
Lmaoo! I agree with Goro. Your personal statement should focus on “Why medicine.” Talking about your passion for biology is...overrated. Everyone essentially applies to medical school because of a “passion for human biology and science.” So, the real question boils down to: what about underserved populations inspires you to pursue medicine? And if you don’t give an iota about underserved populations, you better start today

Silly me...I would think in a PS you would want to discuss your passion for helping people, with evidence of that.

When I was finalizing my ideas for the personal statement, I had a similar thought process. Everyone should and probably does love the science so I feel that focusing on it would be wasting space and/or putting you in a pile with majority of the other applicants. Good to hear that an adcom member agrees.

okay thank you! This may seem like a silly question but I was wondering,

Are terms like "going it alone" frowned upon in personal statements?

I ask because its a narrative but i know it is also a formal statement

going it alone? Perhaps it'd be better if you said the sentence...

I'm a firm believer in that when writing anything, one should avoid cliches

@manohman Your personal statement likely has more issues than just going over the character limit. I suggest you start to actually consider whether an interest in biology necessitates an interest in medicine. What makes someone who is genuinely passionate about biology not pursue a PhD in biology? Do you really think that getting a PhD in biology has no relevance in helping the people or did your 1week experience in Uruguay on a Christian missionary trip show you that through making Bible belts you have a sincere passion through the Lord of assisting underprivileged communities first hand as a primary care physician?

I also am curious what you perceive medicine to be and if you are overestimating the overlap between a broad field like the biological sciences and medicine in modern practice. I think that as a traditional student, it is difficult to draw differences between the two when all you know is four years of biology along with some medical ECs sprinkled on the side. If the PS is hard to write, then it means that there needs to be more personal inflection and honesty. And if that inflection ends up being something brass and craven, then there honestly might be a need for some actual real life exploration outside the academic campus.

I can’t wait to see someone’s personal statement that says: I want to enter medicine so I can be evaluated by suits with MBAs and nurses with desk jobs and be facebook and yelp stalked by patients with personality disorders all so I can drink heavily and question the ultimate survival of the human race. Would be auto acceptance in my books.
