I just want an update on the pharmacy world. Has pharmacy gotten any better in terms of job prospects and future work? Maybe I'm one in a million, but I really wanted to be a pharmacist. I enjoy the track I am on now(DDS - still a student). I enjoy the increased patient interaction, increased autonomy, more hands-on work, better pay and hours, more versatility in terms of specialization etc etc. I have a history with personal dental problems, and it's a good fit..blah blah blah

But I've recently delved into medicinal chemistry and pharmacology research, and I volunteer in hospital pharmacy. I just find myself sighing sometimes and wishing pharmacy wasn't so saturated. I still wouldn't mind going into pharmacy.

Seriously, will pharmacy improve? Is there any freaking hope? Looks like Obamer will do round 2. So AHA is here to stay. Impact on pharmacy? Have there been opening of any new schools recently?

Give me the scoop. 🙂

finish DDS or switch over to NP/PA...much better prospects there. Pharmacy peaked in the early 2000s, and it's only going down from here. Low reimbursements/ rapid expansion of schools/ and stagnant economy will only continue this downward spiral.

NP and PA are starting to show signs of future saturation as well, it's just not certain how soon this future will be. Stick with DDS if you like it.

I'm not planning on switching. I like where I am. I guess I was just curious. NP/PA bubble will soon burst.

If only the number of pharmacy schools could be limited...

avoid pharmacy at all costs!!!!

Nope.

I hope the pharm job market will improve too, but I'm not overly optimistic about it; only time will tell.

Won't happen, it's already too late to turn off the faucet lol

Until some pharmacy schools start closing it's not going to get better...

Supply and demand will set up a correction soon...

Finish DDS and consider Ph.D. while doing or after DDS. Plenty of pharmacologic things you can work on, but switching now and then finding out you don't like Pharm.D. would be terrible in my opinion.

Job prospects are bad in every profession due to the economy. I see no evidence that pharmacy is any more saturated than other careers, and the job prospects for pharmacy are still quite better than average compared to many other careers. It certainly doesn't make any sense to change professions when you are already finishing your D.D.S., but pharmacy is still quite a good career option.

I agree. Stick with DDS. Do not do NP. It is actually worse. Many more schools than PharmD... NP field is already saturated. That's why starting salary is a lot lower than retail pharmacist. Pharmacy new grads still earn $110-$130. I heard that NP grads do not earn anywhere near that.

Maybe the transition from Master NP to DNP would help delaying the saturation but there are too many schools. same issue.
