  1. Pre-Health (Field Undecided)
So, I've been having conflicts with what I want to do in regards to a career in healthcare. However, Podiatry seems to match with what I would expect when looking for characteristics of the ideal healthcare field.

These Ideals are: Working with my hands, Improving patients well-being (In regards to less referrals and independent help), Different range of procedures (Surgery is a HUGE plus), and variability of practice environments (I'd love to work in a hospital and in a few offices).

I just have two concerns:

1) Are my ideals not accurate?
2) When reading on these Pod forums, it seems like Pod's are getting phased out? So, really I'm wondering if the financial aspect and patient influx is still good?

Thanks guys!

*EDIT*

Also, I forgot to mention. I would love a career where I feel useful. By this I mean like, I want to be utilized in more ways than one. So, if the chance ever stumbled upon such as a foot trauma or ankle trauma in the ER, would they refer to a Pod or is that more MD/DO?

omgawd are we getting phased out?! why didnt anyone tell me arrrggghhh

you should go shadow a DPM and see if what he does aligns with your ideals.

Pods are not getting phased out... You're reading comments from the biggest troll on the pod forum. He makes new screen names to make the comments seem legit. Unfortunately the mods will not delete the trash that he posts. 👎

To the OP:

Yes, I think that this is something that would def fit what you want in life.
Podiatry is very rewarding, and I love it.
BUT it wouldn't hurt to shadow and see firsthand, as opposed to hearing other people's opinion.

Good luck!!

Obesity and diabetes are skyrocketing. Podiatry isn't going anywhere.

Whether foot and ankle trauma goes to podiatry vs ortho seems to be more about hospital politics and local attitudes as opposed to a widespread general rule. At some hospitals pods do all the trauma from tibial tuberosity to toes, but those are the exception likely. At my hospital we get basically all foot trauma and we split ankle stuff with ortho.
