Is post bac overrated?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it worked for me

Do they help? yes Are they overrated? yes

People think that their post bac 4.0 or whatever will put them in the 3.5 category when dental schools evaluate applicants them.

If you have 2.9 overall and a 4.0 post bacc, you are still viewed as a 2.9 by adcoms. Post bac won't get you into Columbia or anything like that.

It depends on what you define as overrated. Post bac has enabled many students to attend dental school in which they otherwise may not have been able to. But I agree that a post-bac doesn't instantly cure a poor GPA. Many of the more difficult schools to get into don't weigh post bac very heavily like Penn.

Don't listen to these people. Your DAT scores will get you in. The people who got into dental school didn't get in because of their post bac. They got in because of their DAT scores. Ever notice how those with miraculous post bac stories have high DAT's. Trust me, dental schools could care less about your stupid post bac grades. They will look at your DAT and go from there.

It depends on what your BA/BS was. I had a BS in Engineering, and my friend had a BA in English. We both never had Biology and Organic Chem as engineering or English major. Therefore, post bac is all that counts. It is where I completed all required predental courses.

Your response would be much stronger if you listed some schools.

you're right. I've explained my situation a few times before, but here it is again. My first few years of undergrad was terrible. i lacked motivation, goals, had poor study habits. i had tons of C's, couple D's and an F. With these grades, i applied to D school in 2001. Not to my surprise, i didnt get in anywhere, no interviews, all rejections.(not only had bad grades, but applied extremely late too) my dats scores were a 19, 19,17.
That application cycle made me realize that i must do something and change or i'll regret it later. so during my last year of undergrad, i lived in the library and kicked some upper division science course asses. (straight A's) Thinking that 1 year wont convince adcom about my true abilities compared with years of crappy grades, i decided to do an official POST BAC program for med students.(they made an exeption for me). Again, i did very well in upper div science classes, like biochem, endocrinology, molec genetics. etc. So i guess what im saying is, for my case, I really needed to prove to d schools that I am a qualified applicant who was misguided early on. The only way i could think of to prove this was to enroll in a curriculum that was challenging, similar to what i would experience in dental school.... and from the results, i am glad that i put myself through it. In fact, most interviewers have been praising my accomplishments and told me that they wont count my earlier grades against me.... which was a big relief. But remember, post baccs are most useful if you do well in them. so far , ive been accepted to bu and nyu. and few more interviews to go too.... just my 2 cents.

Post bac works. But with good DAT scores. And my good= above 21 for the average, and nothing goes under 18.

Even if you have 4.0 postbac GPA, and an average of 18, you'll need lots of luck.

ohcdn,
A very inspiring lifestory:laugh:
On a more serious note. I think you touch on something important that adcoms are willing to bend the "rules" if you prove yourself worthy.

Yeah for schools like NYU and BU. They are two of the easiest schools to get into. But in general, you are going to have a hard time getting into any dental school with a low GPA post bac or not. Don't think Columbia will forgive your 2.8 just because your post bac is high.

But lets not forget that he also has a few more interview left, so Id consider his post-bac experience very effective.
