Even though it is jam packed with hemoglobin and has no organells, I still think it is considered a cell.

it's not a true cell bc it's lacking a nucleus, hence the reason it has such a short life span.

A nucleus doesn't determine a cell! Ever heard of that lovely group of cells known as prokaryotes? No nuclei. Still cells.

If we define a "true" cell as one that can DIRECT PROTEIN SYNTHESIS in order to sustain itself or perform its function, than the red blood cell is not a true cell, since it lacks a nucleus which would contain the DNA necessary for protein synthesis. Under our definition, the prokaryote would be considered a true cell because, although lacking a nucleus, it does have a circular chromosome within the cytoplasm that contains dna. So, it is able to direct the synthesis of protein like a eukaryote. However, a mature red blood cell, lacking dna, is not a true cell according to our definition, but is more like a less endowed, yet still functional, cell 🙂

well said.

technically, a rbc should be called a red blood corpuscle.

I believe it is a true cell and so is white blood cell.
I've had the same question and looked up alot of things and they all specifically mentioned that platelet is not a true cell but no mention on rbc and wbc. So that automatically makes them true cells?

correct me if i'm wrong

That's right. All components of blood are cells, except platelets. That's why they are called formed elements instead of just blood cells.

RBCs and All WBCs are cells.

what's leading you to think that a prokaryotic cell is not a true cell?

Well, it was asking "true" cell. RBC is a mature erythrocyte that ejected its nucleus. Because of that, it does not have DNA / RNA to replicate, hence I was thinking the answer would be no, not true cell.

Also Wiki

all cells contain the hereditary information necessary for regulating cell functions and for transmitting information to the next generation of cells.[2]

bump.

this arguement never got solved apparently lol sooo what determines if a cell is a "true cell" and based on that - which of these cells ARE true cells?

rbc
wbc
platelets

wasnt this on destroyer, achiever, or topscore... i remember seeing a question that asked which of the following are "true cells"... it had a few options including RBC... i remember thinking that a RBC wasnt and was shocked when i saw the answer included the RBC...

According to cell theory ...a cell must have hereditary information (DNA) which is passed from cell to cell during cell division
Something can be considered as a cell at one point and not at another
And platelets are cell fragments...not an actual functioning cell

well mature RBC's dont contain a nucleus and therefore cannot pass on info from cell to cell - therefore they are NOT true cells.

wbc's do have a nucleus so ARE true cells.

platelets are made of cell fragments like mentioned above so they are NOT true cells?
so the only true cells outta all these are only wbc's - i duno if that sounds right?

someone else got an answer for this????

i was doing the barron's practice test and they had a question that asked: which of these is a true cell?
i. RBC
ii. WBC
iii. platelet

i know for sure that they said RBC is a true cell.
