Is research necessary to match in optho? I have no research experience whatsoever and seeing everyone posting on this site with 2-4 research projects kinda stressed me out. I am in my third year so I have some time, but do you need it to match?

I'm under the impression that it's important mostly because it demonstrates interest, but I know people who have matched to top 10 programs with zero research experience or publications. See what's available to you during the third year; I was able to publish a few things during third year alone. Might as well try!

Ophtho4321, what other things did those people who didnt have research experience have going for them? really high grades/Step1, connections? thanks interested to know.

bluesclera: step likely > 260, AOA + great grades, great personality

My advice to those in third year would be to find someone at your school or in your city who publishes a lot, email that person, and ask if you can help with something and set up a meeting. you'd be surprised how helpful people can be.
