If your GPA is close to average (maybe 3.4+) and you're looking to beef up your academics, and you're interested, then traditional-ish grad work isn't a bad idea. The biochem/cellbio department at Stony Brook has a 1.5 yr program, btw.
If your GPA is lower than maybe 3.3, then I wouldn't do a program like this because it's too close to traditional thesis grad work.
The reason an SMP gets you into med school, unlike traditional grad work, is that it's 100% applicable to med school - you get judged as a virtual med student in situ.
