is the $ worth it for case western

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
are you from the midwest? because Case is the best university in Ohio hands down, and is very well respected throughout the midwest.

I'm not from the midwest. And I agree that Case Western is the best school in Ohio; however, it's also much more expensive than Ohio State. I'm just saying if the OP is stuck between these two, then he should go to OSU, b/c the reputation of Case is not THAT far off from OSU for it to be worth paying that kind of money.

Harvard, Yale, UCSF, Chicago, sure...not Case.

i am not from ohio.... i just said for an example that OSU i feel belongs in the same league as Case.

Ok. First of all, do like everyone says and wait for financial aid packages to get sorted out. Second, nevermind prestige, you're going to be spending a lot of time working in small groups that you don't get to pick. Consider very carefully if PBL is something you are sure you want to do. If you're ok with that, go to second look for one of the two. See if your personality would mesh well with your potential classmates.

Here's my ranked list of criteria:
1. Curricular features, amount and frequency of clinical exposure, available resources. Where are you going to get a more robust education that suits your learning style?
2. Intraclass dynamics. This is not a joke.
3. Assuming other factors are equal, how much will it cost?

Caveat: As a Case student, I am biased toward Case. However, it's not for everyone. Choose wisely.

Thanks to that video, I am personally completely sold at Case

who cares?

I am from the midwest and I have not heard of case until I started looking at schools to apply. I have heard of Ohio State a lot more maybe because they are always on TV because of their well known sports teams. So fame is a relative thing.

I'm from the midwest, and was accepted to a midwestern school. To be honest, I have never heard of Case Western. Maybe their reputation isn't quite what you believe?

On the topic of Case vs. OSU, I told a physician in my lab that I just interviewed at OSU and Case and he didn't even believe me when I said OSU was a great school by USNews standards but he certainly respected Case. After you get past Harvard/JHU/UCSF/etc, I don't think anyone really pays attention to the USNews rankings.

Just realize that unless you're really in love with specific aspects of the MD program, location, research, etc., you'd be spending the extra cash to just name drop in the future. In my opinion, name dropping within the medical profession is ultimately useless and if you told some random person on the street you went to Case Western Reserve, only a small percentage would be impressed outside of Ohio. The rest would ask you if you were in the military.

For the record, Case is not in any of the parts of Cleveland featured in that video. I would counter with a clip from the 30 Rock Cleveland episode, but my phone and hulu aren't on speaking terms.

No one will care where you went to school, when all is said and done (qualifier - Just as long as you went to school in the US). Save the money.

I recently watched all of 30 Rock and that episode had be rolling.

Are you a model?

In any case, if you feel like Case is the best place for you go there and worry about money later. If it's just US News you are concerned about, then save your money. I interviewed there last year and I thought it was simply awesome, even the touchy feely tuesdays.

I think case seems like a really cool school, but I have been thinking the same thing -- is it worth $50k in tuition per year to me? I'm not so sure.

It's worth it to me, but again, I don't count.

Cleveland Get Away.

Yeah, a lot of that is New York. Some of it is actually Cleveland, though!

Chances are good you'd be just as rah-rah about any other school if you were a student there, though. Some people tend to get that school spirit going and ignore that they might be happier somewhere else (possibly for less tuition).

That's why I'm saying I don't count.
