Is there any chance for arranging a 3-month "vacation"? When would be the best time?

I'm going to do my PhD in a computational field, and it is typical for computational people to collaborate with experimental people. Over the past two years (and will keep meeting them in the future), I've run into several professors who often take on a research student for 3 months to get a feel for the experimental side of the system. When is the best time to schedule a "vacation" like this?

Would be best to do it as a rotation (before you start thesis research).
