I'm in my third semester of college (Sophomore year). I'm in an accelerated medical program, so I'll get into med school as long as I get a 3.5 (If I go below that I'll get a warning or go on probation, unless I get a D or an F in any class, which automatically gets me kicked out). First semester I got a 4.0, and 2nd semester I got a 3.83.
However, third semester I just slacked off a lot. I'm probably doing terribly. It's possible I'll avoid a D or an F in any class. I think I'll get an A in my elective, but my other classes are looking like Bs and Cs (It is actually still possible to get an A in 2 of my science classes, but that would require that I do extremely well on the finals, which isn't looking too optimistic right now). Regardless, I should be able to stay in the program if this is the case.
What worries me is that this will look terrible on a college transcript, and I've been reading posts on SDN from some physicians that top residencies actually look at college transcripts. I was indeed hoping to match into some of the more competitive residencies. I'm worried now that I've killed my chances. Even if I work extremely hard from now on and do well (Which I intend do, considering how miserable these grades have made me), these residencies might take one look at 3rd semester grades and not even consider me anymore.
This possibility is really killing my motivation and hope because I feel like I might just be working towards nothing. I have been trying in the last few weeks to pick up the slack, but it has been really hard since I'm trying to accomplish months of material in a short period of time. I'm sure that next semester, with a fresh start, I can pick myself up again, but is it just for nothing in the end?
