I am an intern that did a month of Internal Medicine - my attending wrote the following:

"Caltechstud was very pleasant to interact with, demonstrated good effort, but is just still learning how to be an intern at this point"

Is this a bad eval? I actually thought I did a good job - going over the plan with my senior before presenting, and got all the work done on time. I don't know what he didn't like about me....

Because there's a big jump in knowledge of an intern to a practicing attending. You may think you're doing well but that's the bare minimum required to be a practicing physician. You're probably missing key differentials or not fully considering everything. But that's ok... you're 4 months into residency ... you're still getting the hang of things. If you eval was "he's ready to be on his own" why the hell would you need residency? The fact that he/she holds you to a higher standard means you're going to learn a lot. Those who get "nice" attendings who let them slide by do these residents a disservice by lulling them into a false sense of security when in fact there's lots of room for growth. Even as an attending I'm learning new things every day.
