I am currently interviewing for jobs for my year off (I will be applying this summer : 2009-10 application cycle). I am wondering if this job offer is something that might be good for someone like me who is pretty determined to attend med school. The position is for a research tech, and requires maintaining a colony of mice with various genotypes for experiments. It involves some experimental procedures, including tissue assays, surgery assistance, and compiling data for experiments. It includes managing several undergraduate students working part time. Is this a good choice for someone in my position?

I am leaning towards it because it pays well with benefits and would allow me to save enough money to do some traveling before attending med school. However, a lot of the work is routine and strikes me as somewhat boring. What do you think? Thanks for the input.

Sounds alright... if its something that you think you would enjoy, then you should go for it. It seems like the typical lab job that many people have during their year off. Do you have any other options though?

hey, beats my only gap year job offer, and that is taco bell.

but then again I live in a state with 10%+ unempolyments, can't wait to leave California!

A research related job that involves some leadership is a good job to write about in update letters. That it comes with good pay and benefits is icing on the cake. I'd go for it. If it's boring, hang out on SDN and give advice.

Actually, most people I know that are taking a year off are doing this. It seems to be pretty common. It sounds like you don't want to do this, so don't waste your time.

I am currently at my laid back, somewhat boring research tech job perusing SDN.😀

The job is great, I got to do some poster presentations and will have my name on a few papers. The actual daily work load is low. It is a lot of doing something and waiting around for an hour. SDN entertains me!

Take it and run. This beats my gap year job, too (in retail).

Get a job doing clinical research! Find a clinical trials team and apply there. It's what I did during my gap year.

Gels, Blots, Flow, etc sucks.
