The assistant professor at my program barely takes home 170k. There seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding neuro salaries lately. Medscape vs MGMA (gold standard) vs AAMC
You would think the AAMC would have better resources than to make this kind of error.

Salary information

Median compensation for assistant professors is $408,000, and for associate and full professors the median is $487,000.2

I personally know a couple of general neurologist making ~ 250-300k in my area, but this is incredible!

Probably. When I log into cim the page there lists academic salaries for mid to late career as having a median of 204k, 75th percentile at 246k.

Edit: they have the same source cited as well.

I automatically doubt the validity of someone starting a thread, when they've only posted one time in this forum. TN, want to take this down?

That data is actually listed on the aamc website.
Here's perspective from a mid-career academic neurologist....
$170K is a pretty average salary for assistant professor, even high end in some parts of the country. $200K for associate professor. Intensivists make more, pure research types make less.

When academic departments report compensation, they are often including more than salary (i.e. retirement contributions, health insurance, malpractice coverage, administrative support, parking). Our department reports a total compensation for me of $400K even though my salary is $190K. Apparently, they do this so you can compare to the advertised compensation offered by private practices, and so you can feel good about having a lower salary than your colleagues in practice.

It's all good. I love academic neurology.

Agreed. That's not bad for an assistant prof in pure academia. You definitely won't get anywhere near that in a places like Boston, NY, SF, Seattle, etc.

Your department is seriously fraudulent. My hospital breaks down all that stuff for me every year in writing and no way does it more than double my base salary.

As a person looking for new career opportunities, I am aware that a local neurologist in my community takes home over 40K per month after he pays his overhead/bills etc. Now if you do the math, that means that he is taking home at least 480K per year. Now, before you start salivating or getting those dollar signs glimmering in your eyes like Mr. Krabbs on the Sponge Bob cartoons does, keep in mind, that is how much he makesafter paying bills but BEFORE he pays taxes!! After that, we are down to about the 330s.

Okay, so he is also in private practice, which means that he needs to buy his own health insurance, dental plan, etc. life insurance, etc. That can be costly. By the time the pie gets sliced, he probaby is taking home somewhere in the 200s

Bottom line, this indivdual could probably brag that he makes well over 400K if he wanted to, but in reality, he is taking home about half of it, so just have to careful of what the reported numbers actually mean.
