MD & DO Is this research experience enough for ortho or a surgical specialty?

Am interested in a surgical specialty , have yet to take step 2.
I have a poster presentation for a case report (first author with the MD)
I also have a poster presentation talking about stigma around OUD amongst healthcare students at my school.

I am in the midst of M3 and have a hard time finding research. Help?

Since neither of these are surgical in nature, you probably need to get at least 1-2 that are directly related to your field of interest. It's not AS crucial as for a surgical subspecialty, but it's definitely more competitive for DO students which you appear to be.

Okay thank you, I should cold call/email gen surg residents sounds like ? Most attendings I know don’t do research since they are at community hospitals

If your other methods haven’t worked. It may be worth a shot. Also reach out to 4th years who just applied gen surg to see how they navigated this

What about for gen surg?
It seems like gen surg cares more about school prestige, class rank/aoa (22% of matched applicants were AOA in previous march), clinical grades, LORs than research but it’s probably good to have something. If you’re an M3 there really isn’t time for new research at this point considering that a lot of pubs seem to take 3-6 months for review alone, not even considering the time it would take to find a project and get it completed

Your best bet at this point is to focus time on step 2 (aim for 265) and away rotations at former DO programs
