Here is an internship description:

An internship with the Rusk County Public Health Department would be a great opportunity for a student who is looking to gain experience and knowledge in the field of Public Health/Community Health in a rural setting. The intern would be working under the general direction of a Public Health Nurse on community health education projects, along with the programs that are established at the department. The programs that the intern could work
with include; the Reproductive Health/Family Planning program; Women, Infants, and Children (WIC); Prenatal Care Coordination (PNCC); Environmental Health; and the Immunization program. Opportunities will be available for the intern to work on planning, implementing, and evaluating community health programs. Some projects that
are available for an intern at the department include; development of health education materials, presenting health information to community members/staff members, research of current/up-to-date health information, evaluation of
current public health programs, and much more.

Is something like this a good idea for a premed student?

Well it definitely is relevant to the health care sector. It seems more geared towards health awareness and promotion

More important question, does it sound like something you will enjoy?

Again, don't do things because they would look "good" do them because they are interesting to you.

Just to reiterate, do it if you think you'll enjoy it. Not to jump on your case or anything, but I don't know why pre-meds are stuck in this mindset that there is a list of specific things that successful med school applicants do. I am a freshman pre-med but luckily I had people educate me early enough about this.

Do the things you love, whether health-related or not because it will make you a much better candidate. It's important to be well-rounded because you will be serving people who are regular citizens of the community and may not be as knowledgeable about science.

About the only thing I can think of that all pre-meds should do, whether they like it or not, is getting patient interaction. But then again, why would you be going into this profession if you don't like that..?

Long story short, take the opportunity if it interests you. Sounds like something I would personally love to do 🙂
