What is the story with UCSF-San Francisco. They have been threatening to start up a residency in EM for years to no avail. Anyone have any hard facts???

I'm shocked that they don't have one already. Are there any em residency programs in SF at all? It's a big city I think it would be a great place to be a resident, hopefully by the time I apply they will.

to live in SF and commute to stanford would not be something I would reccomend especially with bay area traffic it is a relatively long commute. Where is highland? Is it a hospital?

How can you know Stanford and Bay area traffic, and have no idea about Highland?

Try www.hghed.com, or www.saem.org/rescat/ca.htm#hgh.

i am from the bay area and am familiar with the traffic situation but not the hospitals throughout as I haven't even started med school, additionally oakland isn't a very special place to me so i never really go there.

Odd. I grew up in the bay area and am quite familiar with bay area traffic, yet High Land escapes my memory for some reason... ... ...

While you guys are so motivated, and familiar with the Bay Area, perhaps you could try to add something to the question I posted here.
thank you kindly for your assistance.

Well, I DID give you two websites about Highland. As far as UCSF, they've been kicking it around for a while, with, supposedly, half at Moffitt/UCSF and half at SFGH. As far as the ACGME is concerned, there is no program there. As far as UCSF is concerned, EM doesn't even get a website.

there is a web link to an "EM residency" but no page when you get there. However, I also remember seeing job ads for faculty, saying they would be involved in starting the new residency there in 2005.

I hope that they can get it started, they would have great base resources. However, I've heard that some head docs in the IM dept there swearing resistance against the formation of an EM program. You can stop the inevitable though, hopefully the administration will realize the importance of having a strong EM there.

Just wondering, this all seems pretty bad news for Stanford. I know they sell themselves as an academic program but can Santa Clara really take the place of SF General?

By the way MErc44, Highland is right smack in the middle of Oakland, in "don't-leave-your-car-in-the-street-unless-you-are-a-sucker" territory. I have friends at that program that live in SF but its a sh*tty commute. Clinically sound program with a good reputation within the state. The location as the closest program to SF proper makes it a pretty competitive place.

Highland is a very competitive residency largely due to its location. I don't really know anything else about it. If you've lived for years in the City (capital "C"), then anything that happens on the other side of the Bay Bridge may as well be in another universe. The City carries with it the attitude of, "Oh, that's East Bay." Much as I now feel about any of LA east of the 405.
