The research I am planning to do is not wet lab, but rather computer simulations of proteins. However, will this research not be significant because it's not wet lab/directly medical related?

They won't care what kind of research you did, in fact they may be interested to hear about something that is a little outside the normal realm. The important part is that you're doing research!
