otherwise, only 3.9+ 22+ students would receive all the interviews and no one else would
the schools like NYU don't interview as many people with high stats because those people will likely go to other cheaper or more "prestigious" schools

Not necessarily, too many confounders go into the application process to pinpoint why someone with high stats may be passed up for another individual with lower stats. Subscribing solely to yield protection would assume adcoms only look at numbers when extending invites, which many schools (private and public) have said they don’t do when sifting through applications.

All things constant, the higher scores will almost always warrant an interview. Otherwise, there’s no clear cut distinction.
