A flesh-eating and potentially deadly skin disease known colloquially as “Rose of Jericho” is currently being passed around the ranks of Islamic State militants.

Upwards of 100,000 cases have cropped up in recent months, suggesting that a combination of bad hygiene and reluctance to receive medical treatment are causing the disease, Leishmaniasis, to spread like wildfire.

Leishmaniasis typically spreads via sand flies, but the closure of medical facilities during the rapid advance of ISIS/ISIL has made it increasingly difficult to address its spread. The disease begins as a rash that gradually develops into an open wound.

Treatment typically only requires a simple medication to be administered, but when left neglected the flesh eating parasites that comprise the disease can prove deadly.

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has been working in recent years to combat the spread of Leishmaniasis, but they’ve since been forced to retreat from the Islamic State’s advance.

Along with recent defeats in Kobani and other fronts, the outbreak within the Islamic State is yet another reminder that the air of invincibility recently enjoyed by the radical militants is quickly evaporating.

Baghdad Boil, nothing new. Too bad it's not hitting only ISIS, but definitely an interesting read, thanks!

If they want to return to stone ages, let them deal with all corresponding plagues
