My title kinda explains my problem. I am currently at UCLA Gen Chem I/II is considered as Chem 14 A/B/Bl, in which Bl is a lab. Most schools require 8 semester units of chem or 12 quarter units. I know that at CC, Gen checm I/II would be a semester long each and 4 units per class. However at UCLA, chem A and B are 4 units and Bl is only 3 untis (since it is a lab). That only comes out to 11 units! Does this mean i need to do chem 14C, which is organic chem, to reach the unit requirement? If thats the case i will probably take chem at my CC while im at UCLA

As someone who also went to school with a quarter system, I feel your pain. That question is best directed to an advisor at the school you are most interested in. They probably see your type of situation often, and know how to remedy it or suggest classes they will accept in lieu of Orgo.

I also went to a school with a quarter system, and mostly applied to schools on a semester program. I 2nd the advice above - I emailed most of the programs and confirmed how they would convert my credits. Most of them responded pretty promptly.

Ugh...quarter system... 👎

I guess some people like it...

It's hard to avoid in Washington state.

Supplemental applications will be your friend. As long as the course descriptions for your chem sequence match what the programs want, you will be fine. Credit hours aren't going to hurt you.

My transcripts were so messed up. Three different institutions. One on quarters, one on semesters, and one that switched from quarters to semesters halfway through my pre-req sequences. Ugh. The biggest problem I ran into was supplemental apps that only allowed space for two courses per sequence. I never contacted schools to explain everything, but I always found a space on the supplemental app to make a note and let them know I did actually take a year-long sequence.

But in your situation, if I am understanding correctly, UCLA only offers two quarters of chem lecture and one quarter of chem lab? I've found that most programs want a full year of lecture + a full year of lab, which is actually 15 quarter units. I would definitely check with the schools to which you are applying to make sure you meet their requirements.

I went to a 4 year school on semesters for my gen chem requirements, and for some reason they also did not have a Gen Chem I lab, instead they had a longer, more extensive Gen Chem II lab that covered experiments from the first semester. In my opinion, it was a completely ridiculous way to approach the coursework, but I'm sure it is somehow more convenient for the faculty or the school or something.
