so far i've always thought MD is a MD and top10 school diplomas are to stroke your egos and nothing more .. but from speaking to residents & attendings this may not be true - when you graduate from residency the ones w/ better pedigree will get much higher salary offers if you go into private practice, and if you are going into academia good luck getting that chief of surgery position at hopkins w/ podonk diploma!!

sigh i should've studied harder in college ..

which is more impt? my plan was to chill out in college, get into a med school (didn't have to be a top one), kick ass in med school, and then land a top residency. i always figured that internship/residency is where you receive most of your training so it was most important to get a good residency.

those are all political appointments anyways...its not where you went to school its who you know and who knows you.....

So what I wonder is...how long does this last? is it propagated throughout your career, or simply the first couple of years?

furthermore, how much earning potential lost by going to an undistinguished med school can be regained by going to a sufficiently good residency?

actually, the chief of a somewhat prestigious dept. (can't remember which one) at JHU was a graduate of University of Illinois COM. Tufts (which has a good rep, but hardly top 10) has also produced several medical school deans (at U Maryland, Kansas, and Minnesota-TC) and this year one of the Rad Onc residency spots at JHU, and an Ortho spot at Yale, and Surgery at NYP-Columbia went to Tufts grads. Guess you can make something of yourself from a school less prestigious than JHU! or at least I hope so for my sake🙂

Depends.

I went to a state medical school and got interview offers at several big name/top notch surgery programs. However, I think the bigger names run a much higher risk of you getting lesser quality clinical experience (because you get less autonomy)

However, some places do place a big emphasis on pedagree. My program, for example, seems to be inexplicably enamored with Hopkins residency grads. Good luck getting a job as an attending surgeon here if you didn't do your residency at Hopkins.
