This (deliberately, I expect) omits a lot of context. Anyone can find individual verses to support any position imaginable, but only within the boundaries of that false vacuum. I'm curious to know what kind of church you attend, that encourages using the Bible as a weapon against itself.

When religious thought enters the equation, there are no winners. Each side of every story can utilize religion to further their ways and justify their own actions. So why even bother?

Just remember, with so many conflicts in our history, almost all of them have had a religious concept on both sides and fully justified through biblical verse. During the American Civil War, the north found support for liberation of persons in servitude, while the south found passages supporting the act of slavery. Ultimately, they were both fighting for God.

Oh yeah? Come up north to NYC, I'll introduce you to plenty of destitute people from the "absolute dependent class." Guess what, they have to deal with the snow & ice just the same as the rest of us. And I help pay for their survival each time I get a paycheck just like you do in the south. I don't know whose taxes are worse, but I'm convinced that a big chunk of change from my paycheck goes straight to New York's Medicaid pot.

You make it sound like we all grew up in the suburbs with minivans and nannies.
I'm generalizing to make a point. I hear people talk about the south on a regular basis. My point is most people would feel the same way we do if they lived here. Clearly you know what I am talking about and feel the same.

You're right aphistis. I was being absurd to point out absurdity. The Bible is twisted all the time. I just thought it was a little funny that the girl above pulled out a random Bible verse. As for the church I attend, I've been to almost every kind of church. My sarcasm can't be pinned on any one denomination.

ok, I snuck over from optometry to read your thread. Wow! Anyways...
I am horrified at the situation south of where I am (memphis) but we need to remember the people who were too sick or for some other reason unable to make it out or to shelter from the storm.
We also need to keep the people doing "search and rescue" in our thoughts and prayers. Saturday I saw dozens of military convoys on their way through south mississippi. I was excited to know that I was watching "heroes" on a mission. Until I found out that my father was going to be going to Houma, Louisiana for search and rescue (because he is technically federal law enforcement; his actual job is a forester for the us fish and wildlife).
I didn't realize that although I want people to go help, it is scary to think of your loved ones to be the one to actually go there.
What I'm really trying to say is that we need to stop bickering about what's not being done and start doing everything we can to help what IS being done.

Before I die, I want to see a female president!

I have been fuming about the context of this statement for the last two days. I wanted to wait until the emotion has boiled over before I responded, lest I say something rash…..oh, well….we don’t always get what we want.

I believe that this statement, in the context of this discussion is one of the most idiotic statements I could have imagined. You want to see a woman become President. Well, that’s just dandy, but what does that have to do with improving the situation in New Orleans? The current governor of Louisiana is a woman, but the fact that she is without a Y chromosome isn’t exactly improving the situation.

Do not get me wrong. I believe that within our lives a woman will ascend to the Presidency. I can think of several prominent females in politics who would do a fantastic job. People like Elizabeth Dole, Condi Rice, Olympia Snowe, Dianne Feinstein and Christine Todd Whitman would serve admirably in this position. I am a great fan of Margaret Thatcher, who was able to demonstrate that a person who is a scientist, in addition to being a woman, can go far in politics. I am hoping that Angela Merkel is elected Chancellor in Germany in two weeks. I have the feeling that Dental Mom would have a difficult time voting for most of “these women,” because they are not “her girl (specifically, Hillary).”

I think that we need to put all of this bickering aside, and focus on doing what we can to help with the recovery effort. Donate money to the Red Cross, donate blood….these are all things that we can do to help. Uttering comments that are not related to the situation are both distracing and unconstructive. Once the situation is under control, then we can point fingers and assign blame.

I've been in Houston in the last couple days and heard lots of heart-breaking stories from the evacuees. Our church has taken in nearly 300 people. My wife and I were able to delivery tons of donated food and clothes from people around Houston. God bless them all. Please donate.

I'm glad that you've put yourself out there and have been able to assist those in need. That's the spirit that we need more of, and the spirit that Americans are famous for. Keep up your hard work...

Maybe the Democrats should call up Bin Laden on his personal line and ask him to send some his money and aid to help New Orleans. BTW, has anyone read the book called Unholy Alliance about the link between the Democrats view of the US and the Muslim extremist view of the US? Intriguing.

there is no excuse whatsoever for not airlifting food/water in to these "dangerous" areas while planning strategies for evacuation.
Why don't you head down and drive one of the buses, then. Put your ass on the line and then you can complain about it.

We left this thread open so people could have a place to blow off steam about the hurricane tragedy. Now that everyone seems to have moved eagerly into prejudiced personal attacks, I think it's time we packed things in.
