I'm not sure if this happens with everyone here but around this time of the semester I get really lazy, start to fall behind on my work, lose focus, get distracted and everything. My question (to whoever) is:

What do you tell yourself to get yourself to sit down and just study? What goes on through your mind?

So far my friends have told me these helpful lines:

-The hardest part is getting started.
- Med school is a competition, get that A!

Anything else you guys would like to add?

Thank you guys for your time! really appreciate it!

Get off SDN and get your ass in gear! Nobody's good advice is going to get you into medical school.

Also, check Craigslist for Drill Sergeants for Hire.

How badly do you want it? We all get discouraged but thinking about why you truly want to do it helps significantly. At least for me.

I'm in London so it's 11AM =) Good luck the 2nd half of the semester!

Being lazy is great. Why do today when you can do tomorrow? Don't worry about anything man! Like Alicia Keys says: Everything's gonna be alright! [/Gunner]

OPPOSITION EXISTS ONLY IF U LET IT.

it's always that time of the semester for me.

I usually let myself get behind and then when I realize how screwed I am in late-November it puts the fear of God in me and that motivates me to work like crazy down the home stretch. I usually pull it together in time to finish my projects and do decently well on finals.

Semesters are way too drawn out for me. I wish I was at a school that did the quarter system or block system or whatever where you only take 2-3 classes at once but finish them in ~8 weeks instead of ~16.

Its that time for me too. I do well on the first tests and then I always bomb the second ones and then I do well on the last ones to fisnish up the semester

Its the opposite for me. I get better as the semester goes.

I get that every day of my life. You just have to sit down and tell yourself..I'm going to do this now no matter what. I HAVE to do it.

Study tips:

1) don't study with other people

-other people study on their on schedule, which includes frequent breaks and interruptions. Do this only after you have gone over all material and are having trouble with a couple of concepts.

2) don't bring laptop unless you need it to study

3) study in a place with the least amount of distractions(other people you know)

-the library can still be distracting because you see people you know every 10 minutes.

4) before you do work/study...set a goal and don't leave until it is done

5) med school should be a huge motivational factor.

6) undergrad isn't that hard..just put the time in

thank you guys for your help! yeah you guys are right, Med school is my biggest motivator. I'm just going to sit my @ss down right now and do my $hiet.

Anyone else going through this? haha

OP, I feel for you. I have been in undergrad for 5 years non-stop, I am tired and just after mid terms either stuff just clicks on or clicks off and I know what classes are going to be As or Bs. Make sure you make time for you go out and have some fun but make sure you try to get your work done early and you will feel like you are way ahead. Also I recommend coffee, Rockstars ( cola ones are great) or Monsters. There is a time to rest but that isn't now so lets get going. People are depending on you so you need to get the best grades in undergrad you can so you can get the best medical education you can. Get it done.

Caffeine and learning about something fun usually does the trick. Hard to find the latter part though.

Getting started is always the hardest part. I just hang out in the library in one of the private rooms by myself. I put on some Pandora and just force myself to get started. When I finally find my groove, I'll go for hours.

I've got a test in 4 days and I haven't read the chapters yet. I got lazy 'cause the first two exams were in the high 90s...

Like you said, the hardest part is starting. Once I get started I usually power through the chapter, I recommend you try the same.

When you get lazy, take a day off and hang out with your friends or do something fun. Then the next day I'm sure you'll have that fresh energy to study/work. I do this, unless I have midterms, usually then I don't feel lazy though.

It sucks too, because even though I'm lazy I still manage to do well, so it just reinforces the same behavior. Compete with this: I'm a junior, and never in my life have I studied for an exam in advance of 1 day before it took place. That includes finals.

Can't tell if gift or curse.

take it as a gift for NOW that is, but once you get to medical school you'll probably be used to NOT studying. So then, it will be hard for you to adapt to studying because you'll have no choice! but goodluck with everything nonetheless!

I hear ya.

I've been trying to change my study habits, which is much easier said than done, especially when you've been doing the same thing for ~7 years. I'm trying to make it a gradual thing, because there's no damn way I'm going cold turkey

Be careful which part of Craigslist you find Drill Sergeants. Apparently, there's different connotations for "drilling", especially in the Personals section, and it could lead to potentially awkward situations if the wrong type shows up.

I know that game...
