I took the MCAT and did horribly (17S) and my science gpa is less than a 3.0 and my overall isn't that much better...so I applied to a few medical schools but focused on dental because I thought I had a better shot at it.

I just received a secondary from IU. What the hell?! I am an Indiana resident but still! And I know they do initial screening before they send a secondary.

Of course, this doesn't mean I'll get an interview, I know. But it ups my chances apparently (according the the handbook they sent).

Just wondering, how many of you received an IU secondary and got an interview?......

The thing is, because so much time has passed between me wanting to go to IU and me wanting to go to dental school, I'm not even sure I want it anymore. It's somewhat bittersweet. I don't know, I am confused and somewhat sad, which is a strange emotion to be dealing with. 😕

IU Secondary = Interview

They only send the secondary to those who will be interviewed 🙂

Oh my goodness.

Then I guess I'll be rejected AFTER the interview... 😛

How many people that get interviewed, get accepted?

I think for in-state applicants, the number is pretty high ~ 40%?

Congrats on your interview! 🙂

Wow 😱

So after the interview do they still look at stats? Or is the decision based on the secondary and how you performed during the interview?

Stats are always a part of the decision. This is a good opportunity for you so you'd better come up with some great reasons why they should look beyond your stats. Good luck.

All Indiana residents receive secondaries, and only oos applicants who will be interviewed receive secondaries. On the plus side, as someone already noted, IU has a very high rate of acceptance for instate applicants.

If you haven't scheduled your interview yet, but you know you are going to get one, maybe reschedule to take the MCATs in January. With even a months worth of solid everyday study it's not hard to move from a 17 to maybe a 25. Even if they don't officially take January MCATs, I imagine it might help influence their decision if you rock the interview and show an improved score.

All IN residents get secondaries?

But they say they screen within residents.....

My MSAR is two years old and it says that they don't screen residents--I don't know which one is correct, but you received a secondary so I guess that's all that matters

Yeah, then I guess they must have just started screening residents...🙂

Well, this is quite unexpected.

When I met with the Director of Admissions a few weeks ago, he said that all state residents must have a minimum of 24 MCAT and 3.2 to be interviewed...

I was under the impression that it's not a MUST in that you are guaranteed an interview as a state resident IF you meet those minimum standards. If not, they will do a more comprehensive review of your application before inviting you to interview. So it could be in terms of the OP that they reviewed the app, liked what they saw, and decided to interview despite the fact that the numbers were below the stated minimums...

Indiana screens residents. They also have a tremendously large incoming class, so chances are you'll get an interview.
