J1 - Research

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi y'all,

I'm a Canadian medical student (M3). I'll be going to the US between M3 and M4 to do research. Can I still apply and get a J1 visa for this?

Also, what would the difference between an F1 and J1 be in this case?

I tried looking for the answer on the forum, but my situation seems to be a little different.

Cheers!
F1 is a student visa.

J1 is generally a work related visa.

Is this unpaid research associated with a medical school? Likely to be F1.

If its paid research, then i believe they will sponsor you for the J1. It shouldn't be a difficult process. Unrelated to the j1 process for medical residencies and fellowships.
