I am currently a 4th year in an american school.
I am an Ontario resident and I plan to do my residency in US.
Problem is.... most of the programs (neurology) I want offer only J1.
So I have a couple questions:

1. for my J1, I would need the Ontario agency for that Statement of Needs, is it true that they don't have any specific specialty in mind? Just first come first serve?

2. Do I need to take MCEE for the Statement of Needs?

3. For my "plan", can I just mention that I will do all the required exams (MCEE1, 2, etc) and do my extra year of neurology after I come back to Canada for 2 years?

What do you guys think?

It varies by province and yes you need the EE.
I've friends doing it now and it sounds really bothersome. Here's the government site with the details:

-if I were you, i'd activate the optional practical training portion of your current F1 which allows you to work in the US for up to 18 months. Then do your Step3 and apply for an H1B .... you don't need a statement of need if you go this route and the H1B leads to perm resident status.

-also, a J1 visa means you HAVE to return to Canada unless you obtain a waiver.

-talk to your programs about it ... many may not know about the practical training portion of the F1 ... and many just say only J1 as that's the visa that ECFMG looks after so many programs know very little about the H1B but you may be pleasantly surprised when you tell them you're Cad and are interested in knowing how you can help them in sponsoring you for the H1B.
