Do you think an interview the week of 1/18 would put me at a significant disadvantage? I want to schedule earlier, but my grandma has a wedding to go to in NYC on 1/30 and she wants me to go with her. So I thought maybe we can go a couple weeks earlier (like 15/16 ish) and I can interview/vacation/sightsee/wedding all in one go.

So do you think that would be a little late? Should I just ditch my grandma and go interview earlier in January? 🙄

Simply put, the earlier the better. SUNY lets you know the status of your application immediately (If Dr. Johnston is there when you interview). I was accepted the day of my interview, so lets just say by you delaying your interview you let 12 more people interview before you, then there could be considerably less seats to fill. I'm not saying its going to hurt your chances drastically but it is getting late in the application process so I would say every little bit counts. Just my opinion.

i think it really just depends how confident you feel about your application

When is the earliest you can interview? The earlier you schedule, the better.

By the time January rolls around, many of the seats have already been filled. You're already competing for a fewer amount of seats, don't put yourself at MORE of a disadvantage by voluntarily delaying your interview. On average SUNY interviews about 12 applicants a week. Two weeks (roughly 24 applicants) can certainly make a huge difference-- especially towards the end of the cycle.

I'm sure your grandma will understand.

Also note that the longer you wait to notify them of your interview date, the bigger chance you're taking that the date you want will be full. Last year when I was notified about my interview invitation, I only waited a few HOURS to call and the date I wanted was full. It didn't end up making a difference in the long run, but ya never know.

I was invited for an interview for SUNY and they told me that they would be sending me something in the mail that will give me more details about that day. However, I got nothing in the mail and I only realized that today.... What could I do? the interview is tomorrow . Does anyone know what I am supposed to bring?
Also, someone told me that they may ask about politics- do they really?

You need your updated transcript and a photo of yourself. And yes, they have been known to ask about politics.

Can it be any photo or are they specific?
do you know what time their office opens?

Hmmm I showed up without a transcript or a photo to my interview and they never asked for either.

I printed my photo and transcript the night before and forgot them at my house in PA (it was a long week of traveling and I had to wake up early!) So I realized this halfway to NYC and started freaking out. I made my dad and I stop in an internet cafe at Port Authority to print new ones....and lo and behold...they never even asked =P

At the end of my interview, they asked if i had a picture so they could put it with my file and i ended up giving them one of my high school senior pictures (in a tux)! Then i asked them if they wanted my transcript also and they said sure, since i had it with me.

In my interview, Dr. Johnston asked how I kept up with current events. No specific questions about politics were asked, but I did hear that they tend to ask questions about politics and current events. I suggest watching CNN on occasion and reading the newspaper until the day of your interview 🙂

Hope this helps, and good luck with your interview!

They drilled me with a political question. What would I think Obama and McCain should debate on.

Then they followed up with a why. And of course, they asked what I thought of their views. And then they proceeded to ask me how I would go about solving the dilemma I had proposed etc etc.

It sucked.

Holy nightmare.

Yikes! I'm not very political at all...I would have had no idea how to answer that.

Hopefully nothing like that this year since it's not an election year. 😱
