hi there, i'm currently a freshman at a community college. i noticed most md schools prefer that you take your pre-req's at a 4 year university. i plan on transferring to ucla within 2 years. would it be wise for me to take all my ge classes at the community college while taking the pre-req science classes through the ucla extensions introductory science program? money aside, is this something you guys would recommend?

Most of the UC's don't care. UCSD however does say on their website that they prefer that you take your pre-med courses at a 4-year. However they also say that they understand that this may not be possible for some do to various reasons. Ultimately, if you do well at UCLA or whereever you transfer to, you are pretty much good to go in the eyes of the UC...especially if you went to a CC in CA.

Outside of California, that may be a tad different. Many of my friends were transfer students (to UC's), and they didn't run into any problems with applying to med schools in and outside of CA, but it must be noted that East Coast schools, and perhaps Ivy League schools have some kind of bias vs. CC coursework. I think there are 1-2 schools that flat out reject any courses taken at a CC. Very strange, considering top schools, such as the UC's take in a good number of people who were previous transfer students. Oh well such is life.

In all honesty though, if the schools that you want to go accept CC coursework, take whatever you like, whereever you like. Just do well both at the CC and at UCLA.
