i can't help but feel that some people at my school and in my family are really jealous of me for getting into dental school. i feel sorry for these people in that they don't get to go to dental school, but in a way, it irritates me and frustrates me, like i feel they don't have a right to be jealous of me because i worked a long time and made sacrifices to get into dental school. anyways..its just frustrating and i'm tired of it

Exactly, TG. Would you be jealous of those who have deposits at many institutions next year if you were not accepted? If not, disregard my statement. Many have work just as hard, or maybe harder than you, and still end up short.

People have a right to feel however they want to feel. I'm sorry your family isn't supportive - that does suck. As for everyone else - I'm sure there are people who worked harder than you and made more sacrifices than you did and still didn't get into school. If it was you standing on the outside wanting to get a seat, I'm sure you'd feel the same way. If they're not your best friends, I honestly don't know why they'd care all that much about whether you got into school or not.

Take it as a compliment. You can't change it but you can change how you let it affect you. Your family members may be jealous because you dared to live your dream and they didn't.

P.S. You might want to grow thicker skin prior to dental school. If you are bothered by this, wait until you get the bench instructor from hell who you can't please no matter what. It will bring frustration and irritation to a whole new level.

Everyone has their flaws, and this does often causes jealousy issues. What you have take that jealous that's being thrown at you and transform it into respect. Maybe they're jealous of you because you unconsciously act like being a dentist means everything is going to be easy for you from now on. You need to prove to these "family and friends" that's just not true. You can prove this to them with your actions. For example, as a dentist, you have the ability to accept insurance from medicaid patients, something many dentists do not do. Providing dental care for the indigent means you're willing to accept less payment for equal amount of work. If your friends and family see these, they'll surely feel thankful for the service work you've put forth throughout your career.

Don't take this the wrong way, but don't be arrogant even though you may have worked hard to get to d-school. I was arrogant once about my accomplishments and (I blame it on Karma) got bit on the ass for it.

strange, my family (namely my father) is extremely proud of my accomplishment. Most people i talk to, who ask me what i'm doing, are very impressed as well. It's the pre-med students who applied and were rejected who love to hate on my choice to go to dental school.

Well, I'm sorry to hear your dilemma but as for me, I have not truly felt that jealousy. What I noticed more of is people referring to me for dental related issues and others requesting free work done. LOL. It's pretty annoying because I have alot of friends and every week at least 2 ask me for free work and I have not even began D1. WOW!

Congrats to all in the professional fields of study, we are blessed so we can be a blessing to others. That is all that should matter. Nevermind what nay-sayers do. Congrats and good luck!

Anyway, my dad is sooo proud of me. Whenever he introduces me, he goes, "Here's my son, he's going to be a dentist" I'm like, "Dad!!!! I'm not even in school yet". But I understand what you mean Stephie3. Competition in my family is high (not within my immediate family, but amongst my relatives). Throughout my childhood I was always compared to my cousins by their mothers.. and now I kinda feel they're a bit jealous.. but I don't even think twice about it. Everything you feel is of your own perception. If you think it's a nice day, then it IS a nice day.

i would find jealousy from immediate family members a bit bizarre, but i can definitely relate to this coming from extended family. there will always be someone giving you a hard time about something. F em. soon enough you can sit around being irritated by their jealousy while you're sitting on a beach drinking a martini.

p.s. if any of your friends are anything but ecstatic for you, get better friends.

Some bench instructors have extremely high standards making it very hard to have the level of success initially as you did in undergrad. Sometimes you can't see what you did wrong because your dental eye isn't developed yet. It's not so much that they are mean, just very demanding and this gets extremely frustrating. This is great in the long run but not so fun in the interim. My point to the OP was that frustration is a part of dental school. It's something you have to learn to live with and not dwell on or it can make some classes unbearable.
