My neighbor has the new bigger one, he's always driving around with the top down and a big smile on his face. I always thought they were cheap fun. My x of many years ago had one. There's something sexy about an athletic chick with a pimped our wrangler.👍

Totally recommend it. Had one for 10 yrs. Never had ANY mechanical issues. If something came up, you could likely do much of the work on your own with some internet guidance if you have moderate mechanical skills.

I will always remember days with the top down and the doors off. Probably the best drug I've ever taken ( I haven't taken very many). Instant smile on my face, changes my mood after the worst day @ work. My wife will tell you that car had a prominent part in our courtship. Not sure where you are in that realm, but you will receive attention from women. I've been pulled over and asked out, and I've been flashed with bare breasts.

If you're talking about a second car, get one that's a few yrs old. Not much changes in body style from year to year, and they hold their value quite well compared to other cars.

Get a real jeep:

I've built up CJ7's, XJ Cherokees, TJ Wrangler's, and now the old J10 Honcho.
Once a Jeep, always a Jeep. Learn the wave, and the point system for the wave. http://jeeptalk.org/jeep_wave.php

It gets worse with time- nothing can remain stock.

I like the new JK rubicons because they are just about the only vehicle currently produced (at least in the United States 😡) that has a solid front axle and factory E-lockers F/R. If I wasn't obsessed with 80 series Land Cruisers then I'd consider buying one. You can pick these up for cheap and they are extremely reliable and some came with factory E-lockers and they are the last Toyota available in the US that had a solid front axle/full float rear axle. You can't take the top off but they are still a lot of fun to drive.

If you are a baller you could consider an Icon FJ40, FJ44, FJ45 etc. Eventually I'd like to pull the body off the white cruiser and replace it with a 4 door aluminum tub like the one Icon uses in the FJ44 below. It will save me about $140,000.😱

The Icon FJ45 is sick.

Boy do they ever. So much so that it's a bit frusterating at how much even some of the used ones can run.

Dude... that's what I'm going to end up with next Spring (after my daycare drops $750/month). I've been keeping my eyes on the newer (JK) Rubicon unlimited... with a manual tranny. With the 3 car seats, I need the JK unlimited (4 door), and I wouldn't mind doing some wheeling... which is why I like the Rubi... and I just want a manual.

I think for what you want, just a base model (sport) would be fine. If you get one with a hard top, you'd probably want to get a hoist for your garage, although I don't know if you'd need one for the 3 piece top or not. The JK (2007-present) underwent a massive redesign, including a "new" V6 powerplant to replace the Inline 6 that was in the TJ (and YJ?) before. It's gotten a lot of flack for being too plastic. This was partly by design for Jeep, b/c the plastic parts keep cost/weight down, and the hardcore wheelers are just going to put aftermarket parts on anyway. Another way to look at it is this: If you are offroad with the JK and get your fender snagged on a tree, you will just tear the plastic off instead of ripping a bunch of metal off the side of your Jeep.

If you need more cargo room (for boards, etc), they make roof racks that can fold up so you can take the top up/down. I'd recommend www.quadratec.com for accessories. That's my dream catalog. 😎

Here is a link to an Edmunds site with reliability info:

http://www.edmunds.com/jeep/wrangler/2007/reliability.html

That info is for the 2007, which was the last major redesign for the Wrangler.

I haven't owned one, but I've done a lot of research... it's what I've wanted for many years, but life kept getting in the way. Hopefully it doesn't much longer. 😎

Hope life is treating you well. Thanks again for those books, some of them have come in handy.

Laters!

Wow thanks for all the responses. Yo rt2md Im glad the books came in handy. Just help out another poor med student as people helped me and I helped u and keep the good karma going!

Well I'm leaning towards that jeep more than ever. I'll keep y'all posted. Thanks

They're cool if you're a girl. Or gay.

You would probably be able to fit all of that stuff as long as you have the top down and and a bike rack on the back. I had a jeep for a while and I plan on getting another one someday. As long as you don't mind getting 8 miles to the gallon I would definitely recommend one. They are crap in the winter though.

Will do, no worries!

I have a 2011 JK 4dr sport and absolutely love the thing. It is absolutely HUGE, great for towing the quads and jetskis, holds an insane amount of cargo and is just a dream on a nice day with the top and doors removed. The only downside is the lack of power (even in the 2012s with the new engine) and the pitiful fuel economy. You'll eventually get used to the lack of power since you'd probably kill yourself in it had a V8 in it but the $75 fillups every few days never stop hurting. I paid under $28k out the door for mine and I can honestly say it is my all time favorite every day car.

Update: FInished my J10 build and it looks like this:

Then I traded it in after 3 months to get this:

Ride is better than my wifes old Grand Cherokee. Leather, heated seats, power windows, remote start, Nav, BT, etc. Only downside is 17mpg. But that's 7mpg better than the old pickup.

What about driving occasionally in the winter with a soft top? I live in Michigan and would like to get a new Unlimited with a soft top and use it as an second vehicle. May end up using it some winter days.

Every person and their brother has a Wrangler here in Colorado. Or a F-150. I'm told by many peeps that the rag top in the winter isn't a problem for keeping the heat in the car.

Anecdotal, but I've asked a few around. I like the look of the solid Wrangler with a roof that matches the car (as opposed to a black roof). As in the Orange job below. I especially like this car in ALL WHITE, including hard roof, black tinted windows, and black rims, on nice big wheels. It's a sharp look. Dude nearby mods all these, I've spoken to him already for when I get mine, which is on the very near horizon. 😀 I wanna get a little lift, tires, and those black rims, front fogs, maybe a roof cage, holder for external can, winch, the mountains starting in the backyard here give me an excuse for every $$ spent on the mods. i mean ride. 🙂

For the occasional drive in the winter it would be fine--especially if the drive isn't long and you don't mind a little extra road noise.

There are few things that I enjoy more than evening drives in Michigan country with doors and top off. I'll bundle up and crank the heat until evening temps. start hitting the 30's. So relaxing!
