I matched at Jefferson, and was planning to rent for the first year. Does anybody have any tips/recommendations on living close and walking vs. living farther away and driving in? Any recommendations on rentals near the hospital? Am I crazy to rent there?? Thanks!

I'm not too familiar with the area but in terms of whether you want to rent or buy, we were told that if your residency is 3 years long, renting and buying should cost you approximately the same amount.

If your residency program is longer (4-5 years), then it might be more financially sound to buy instead of rent.

Sorry I can't provide any more useful info!

Hi lmh14! Welcome to Jefferson!

Parking is the major issue that you would face if you lived far enough to necessitate driving. There is NO free parking only discounted parking; monthly parking can cost $180+ per month. There are plenty of great places to rent around the hospital. Many residents live in the Ben Franklin house, which is literally one block from the hospital. It's slightly more expensive than some other places, but has washer/dryer in each apartment and a doorman (to get your packages, key when you're working all the time). I would also check Craig's list for places. Also check out the Chancellor Building and the Metropolitan. Basically the neighborhood around Jefferson is a great place to live. Easy to walk to grocery stores, movie theaters, etc. I would definitely NOT drive. Good luck with your search!
