3rd year med student possibly interested in psych. I was wondering for those practicing as physicians or residents who getting ready to apply for jobs, how is the job market for psych? Also, what kind of offers are out there?

There is absolutely no job market for Psciatry. I wouldn't hire a Psciatist to wash my car or mow my lawn.

Lol. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk this one up to a lagging computer.

The job market for psych? A bit like the marriage pool for Ben Affleck. Really, really good. Although, it's impossible to find a beautiful single woman with no baggage. And since they want you so badly, it'll be hard to judge objectively.

What are some job offers you have heard? Only reason I ask is my family is concerned that psychiatry is really low paying and that finding a job will be tough. I know this isn't true. But being a medical school student, I really don't have too much knowledge and experience on this subject.

This is a great summary, lol.

Seriously, you med students just need to browse or search this forum for ten minutes. This question is asked every week and the answer hasn't changed. Psychiatry pays well, is challenging, job market is excellent.

Or instead of asking here, look at actual job listings. Your question is too vague. There are lots and lots of jobs. They are in lots and lots of locations. They can involve many different things. The pay will vary depending on what they are and where they are.

The answer to your seemingly simple question is thus very very long and exhausting to contemplate.

The short version is, you'll be fine.

If you like, I could forward you some job solicitations from my spam folder. That should be more than sufficient to placate your parents.

As a psych *applicant* I've already started getting physician recruiters attacking me.

Or you know what? Go to one of those physician recruiter websites. Just google psychiatry jobs. You'll find them. Claim to be a psychiatrist looking for work and give them your cell. Or maybe better yet, your parents' cells. See how long before the volume of calls becomes so obnoxious that you need a new number. I'm thinking it'll take about fifteen minutes. Maybe twenty.

I'm sorry, but your family must not know the first thing about psychiatry. It is fine to have an opinion, but ask them what it is based on. Any amount of looking would show they have it as wrong as you can get.

Now that the APA doesn't take money from pharma, where else can they go? What did someone here call the APA? "A bunch of adults playing student government". I wish it where that innocent.

I'd recommend going into emergency medicine. Retrain in psych once you've made some $ and burnt out.

Emergency medicine has some real burnout and stress though. I was thinking ER but yea its tough.

Psychiatry does seem to attract these irrational fears more than any other specialty. My mom said similar things to the op's parents when I went into psych. She would have been fine had I done other lower pay (even lower pay than psych specialties) such as peds or FM, but psych, nope, no jobs and no money for those folks.

Enjoy the "terrible" job market 🙂

I'm receiving snail mail psychiatry job offers and I'm a friggin second year medical student. (100% serious)
probably not, I'm guessing that the APA or someone sold them a member list and thousands of trees died.
Yep, this must be it, APA student membership.

Psychiatry enjoys one of the best job markets in all of medicine, in terms of volume. Pay is decent. Plenty of other threads talk about pay.

I get about 5 phone calls/week and 50 emails/week with 1.3 years left in training having never volitionally given out contact information. Im more concerned not getting bothered by recruiters than finding a job.
