As a form of escapism after a crappy day of residency I was looking at the kinds of jobs available on recruiters websites and I found it interesting to compare the number of posted job openings in different specialties relative to the number of graduating residents. I understand many of the best jobs aren't posted and that there may be a selection bias of which specialties post in different places (though this website is an aggregator of many services). I was using MDsearch.com
General Surgery 1440 (1200 spots)
Ortho : ~1700 (700 spots)
Uro : ~1050 (300 spots)
ENT: 776 (~300 spots)
Neurosurgy: 310 (200 spots)
Vascular: 350 (not sure how many spots between integrated and fellowship)
Plastics: 106 (136 spots)
ophtho: 124 ( 440 spots)
I was surprised by the results for plastics and ophtho, I would have thought they would be in higher demand. Some of the other in demand fields relative to the number of training spots were Derm and EM. Still, things looked much better in surgical fields then in some others that are known to be more saturated.
Anesthesia: 500 (1600 spots)
Pathology: 37 (600 spots)
Cardiology: 285 (729 spots)
Radiology: 94 (~1180 spots)
