How does the future for Emergency Medicine physicians look like in the future? Is the field getting saturated. There dont seem to be many jobs for them. I could be wrong, please enlighten me

Currently demand is outpacing supply. In fact, current growth in demand is outpacing EP growth. You might not get your dream job out of residency, but there are certainly positions available. Everyone I know has found a job without any difficulty.

on a similar note, there's predicted to be a shortage of intensivists.

I've agonized over this question entirely too much. 4 things have stood out...

1. I can't pick a specialty based on job prospects. It I was going to do that I'd be a wealthy but miserable Dermatologist.

2. The specialty organizations (who hopefully know more than we do) are not concerned about oversaturation.

3. None of my advisors or any PD I have talked to (3) are worried about this. In fact one of my advisors (who is intimately involved with one of the specialty orgs) told me he is far more worried that overcrowding and population growth will make quality EPs such a scarce commodity that the market will open back up for FP/IM.

4. The market is probably already saturated in some big cities. If you want to work in Boston, you are probably going to have a hard time finding a primo spot. This is almost certainly true for many other specialties. Maybe some of the senior residents can support/dispute this claim?

The other thing which is a bit more of an intangible is that at least a few of the EM applicants in my class are fairly candid about their intention to be a part-time MD. I'm not sure how this will play out in the grand scheme of the job market.

As current experienced EPs begin to retire, and population (baby boomers) continues to explode in the ED, there will be a tremendous need for many years to come. Wide Open.

Don't worry.

The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades.

Take care,
Jeff

From another thread.
EmCare (which is the huge EM staffing group that I work for) is actually projecting a worsening EP shortage over the next 20 years as the docs in the boomer generation start to retire. With those retirements and the usual attrition the shortfall can't be replaced by graduating residents. In fact the current EmCare and ACEP thinking is that our biggest danger as a specialty is that if we can't staff the needed positions with BC EPs the internists and FPs will have a greater incentive to move in on EM jobs.

Got tired of boss. Emailed five resumes Monday - only looking for academic jobs in NYC. Got three interviews Wednesday. Had first interview at first choice on Tuesday, offered said job. Still taking emails/calls of others who want to interview/hire me.

The world is your Thai hooker...🙂
