Hey guys, CA3 here, and need advice on how to go about job search. I'm at an east coast program and finalizing where I want to end up. I'm most likely going to do california (most likely northern) for about 2-3 years with the intent on coming back to the east coast. I've gone through gaswork with average offers. Currently, I'm torn between doing locums/non partnership track.
Can someone please explain the dynamics of locums. Are you moving around constantly or can you stay in a particular area. Also, can you tailor make your schedule and is the pay more? And, if there are any people in the northern cali area that can be of assistance, please PM me.
For me, i'm going more for lifestyle, interested in no calls, but will do home call if necessary. Not interested in partnership as I plan on coming back to east coast after 2-3 years. Not concerned too much about money as my wife is also completing her CA3 year in anesthesia like me, and we both don't want to exert ourselves like in residency at least the first year.
Thanks, and your help/advice is appreciated.

I'm not quite sure what it is you're looking for.

You say you want a job somewhere in California. California has 1/8 of the US population; it's a big place. Even Northern Ca is a big place - you wanna live in Alturas or the Castro?

Since the only thing you mention wanting in a job is little call (and willing to take little pay), I'm not sure how we could help steer you toward jobs that fit you well. Price yourself slightly below market and almost any group would take you on.

I'm looking near the san francisco area...suburbs. There is a non partnership track, isn't it. Basically you come to work 5 days a week, and don't take call. If you know of groups out there, hospitals, work environment that I should know about, please feel free to share.

Some places, that's what the partners do 🙂

If you want to be in SFO & suburbs, getting a list of hospitals and making phone calls would probably work. I can't imagine that there are any desirable locums gigs in the bay area.
