As an M4, I worked at a Sports Med Clinic affiliated with a large university that I really loved and am hoping to complete a sports fellowship after residency. As an intern I realize it's early, but does anyone have any information regarding competitiveness/# of applicants to some of the larger university programs? Additionally, the more I look into it, the more I plan to complete family residency and a sports fellowship, and then only practice sports med. I would love to work strictly in a sports med clinic, and was hoping someone could provide any insight into the job opportunities/salary/benefits, or any other useful information. I've been through the AMSSM site, but couldn't find any solid info. Thanks!

At my local program, we have only 2 spots each year for sports medicine. We are a medium sized city in the northeast. I could ask my friends, but as I understand it is pretty competitive. One of my colleagues is now a sports medicine fellow, and he had a +5 year concussion research project, was a former DPT, and has worked with University sports teams in the past.

Our local large university ortho group has 3 sports medicine trained family medicine doctors. I also know of multiple family medicine groups that will have one sports medicine trained FM who practices as such.

Honestly AMSSM has a job board when you go to the annual meeting with sports medicine specific jobs. I remember there being a WWE ringside physician job opening a few months ago, but that has currently closed. I'm currently a fellow and will be off doing a combo of both family and sports in an academic setting. It is definitely possible to do 100% sports medicine. One of the fellows in my program last year joined an private orthopedic group, and the fellow the year before that is doing 100% sports medicine for a private pediatric group.

Student Health/University clinics tend to have some SM trained physicians. Some of those jobs tend to be from a sports medicine fellowship, so going into academic sports medicine could be an option if you like treating the college crowd. Another popular one is to join an orthopedic group to be their non-operative physician, and I have had some calls/emails about job openings in that sort of aspect.

The opportunities in sports medicine trained physicians are good man. I've had plenty of interviews for just family medicine groups alone really interested in bringing a provider that's also trained in sports med to help with some MSK and joint injections, plus it's good marketing for the local group if you want to cover local HS games.

In terms of competitiveness, it's decent. The big name sports medicine fellowships at large universities tends to be a little more competitive, because treating Division I athletes is a good appeal. Also the swag is better haha. :highfive:
