confused about some of these acronyms after ppls names and what orgnizations bestow them. Could someone clarify?

John Doe FABA, FAPBM, DABAPM, FIPP, ABIPP

DABA----Diplomate of am board of anes

FAPBM--fellow of amer pain ?????? is this AAPM's 'board certificatin"

DABAPM- Dipl of Am Board of Anesth Pain Medicine

FIPP--fellow of interv pain physicians ----WIP's

ABIPP---amer board of pain physician -----ASIPP's


The only ABMS certified ones though are DABA, and DABAPM correct? This stuff is confusing when I see it behind people's names. I'm not saying it's not necessary, just wanting to figure out which one is which.

The only ones you need to know are:

John Doe MD, OMG, WTF and

Jane Doe MD, LMFAO.

These cost much less to obtain than your other letters, and mean just as much.

On a related note....I have successfully taught laypeople how to accurately determine who is a doctor and who is a nurse or in another allied field in the hospital (as they all wear long white coats...)... the ones with multiple sets of acronyms after there names are not physicians

All you need to see is M.D.
If you see a bunch of acronyms, that is generally overcompensation for not being an M.D.


Or in the original guy's case, maybe he's not pain boarded by ABMS, (or wasn't fellowship trained, etc., ) so is overcompensating with the alphabet soup?

I'm just trying to find out what these letters all mean. Sort of confusing. I know there are multiple Pain "societies'.

ok, so what are people using in their ads/marketing for ABMS BC designation? Keeping in mind we come from many specialties. It may seem like a dumb question but it is not clear to me and I'm not dumb (I have two cert from AAPMR, and the wording of the Pain one just says "subspec of pain med").

Given the explosion of alphabet soup used by noctors and doctors alike, the real question becomes do any of the referring doctors really care or even know the difference in all the letters after someone's name or their board certifications?

depends on who you are advertising to - to referring docs list each board cert, subspecialty and certifying board. we all should understand those designations along with academy fellowship. To the lay public they may not comprehend board cert, just advertise as specializing in... pain medicine, spine medicine, rehab medicine, anesthesia, etc
