Hey guys, I am applying to Johns Hopkins with many other highly ranked schools. My stats are:
BCPM GPA - 3.8 ; Overall GPA - 3.74 ; MCAT - 36M
Research - 2 publications
Leadership stuff
The usual volunteering
Teaching etc etc.

What I wanna know is, do I have a chance of getting into any of the the following schools:
Baylor College of Medicine
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
Duke University School of Medicine
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicin
University of Chicago - Pritzker
Vanderbilt University School of Medicine

I am thinking JHU is a little too ambitious. what do you all think?

Thanks for your input

GREAT shot at CWRU.

Good chance at some of the rest. Don't know about Hopkins without more specific EC details.

You really really should add more schools than you have, another 5 or so mid-upper tier schools. Even if you have great stats, this process is still a complete crap shoot.

I do have other schools that are not as competitive. UAB, USA and University of Miami. Uab and usa are state schools and i think i should be able to get into those fairly easily, hopefully. The ones I mentioned are the reach schools that I am applying to.

you have a shot at every US school wiht those ECs/numbers.

but you should know that already, looking at the mean gpa/mcat of those "reach" schools!

thanks Dulcina! I was talking to someone the other day and he said that since I am an East-Indian, i have to have at least a 38 to be considered at JHU. I figured I would get some different perspectives from SDN.

We had a white guy with much lower than a 38 interview at JHU..i think as long as you meet their minimum requirements...probably low to mid 30s and gpa probably 3.6+...they look at your ECs more.

Wash U on the other hand....best stats usually win

thanks for the info chubbychaser. are my EC's good enough or do I need to add more to the list?

No Johns Hopkins is a world renowned university and its affiliated hospital is world class. That has nothing to do with USNEWS.

So is the Mayo clinic, and UCLA, and UCSD, and almost every other med school in the States. They are a good school, but not so good that it should be considered a do or die situation.

This is true. However, most other schools' hospitals are top-notch, also. They just don't have the Hopkins name behind them.

I wasn't addressing the appropriate level of desire one should have for these schools I was simply responding that to suggest that the only reason one would be interested in these schools is simply because USNEWS ranks them highly is ridiculous.

Milkman, most other schools don't have the resources that Hopkins has. Are you actually suggesting that other hospitals differ from Hopkins only in name? The amount of money they spend on their facilities is simply unthinkable for some schools. While I agree that most schools and their hospitals are top notch, I won't pretend that most schools are on par with Johns Hopkins' affiliated hospital. It's got its name for a reason.

All I'm saying is just give credit where it's due and Hopkins has more than earned it.

And this has what to do with quality of physician training?

Lol I've never seen such an unabashed hatred towards top schools as on this board. I'm not even suggesting that they're the end-all-be-all as the general public believes but you all refuse to acknowledge that they are in any way better than any of the other medical schools in the country. 🙂

Where med school is concerned, yes.

Okay...West Virginia University has Step 2 and Step 3 scores that are out of this world. Does this mean that WVU has a better medical program than Hopkins, Harvard, and Mayo?

Pretty much all med schools are cut and dry with the same basic programs.

The right answer is to throw away your USNEWS magazine and go to the cheapest MD school you get into.
