Hello everybody,

I am a high school student who applied to the Joint degree program at Adelphi University and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

I have been invited to an interview by Tufts which will take place in March. It will be my first college interview. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks

My suggestions would be to talk about your passion for dentistry. Make the admissions committe know that you are aware of both the general practice and the various specialties such as orthodontics, endodontics, and maxilofacial, as well as public health. Try to be honest about whether you want to be a general dentist or a specialist in the future. Also, if you have done any type of research projects related to science or mathematics in high school at all I would also talk about that as well. Finally, if you have taken AP biology or chemistry, than talk about how you were most interested in those subjects as well, and how that will translate to success in dental school.

In this interview, you have to show that you have decided dentistry earlier than most people. In other countries, remember, most students go to the equivalent of dental school or medical school right after college, and they earn a bachelors and masters in either medicine or dental medicine as in China. Also, have you shadowed a dentist? If so, also talk about that as well. In other words, you have to show that you have made a mature decision to pursue this career path earlier than most.

Good luck!

I'm sure you meant high school right?

Yes, I meant high school. I am in a graduate biostatistics program where
some Chinese students have a bachelors and masters in dental medicine and some have a bachelors and masters in medicine from Peking University. They switched to statistics since they claimed they could not study for USMLE or the dental boards. I do not know why. What are the procedures for a dentist, let us say from China, to practice in the U.S., by he way?

All foreign dentists must first pass the National boards (at least the first one, not sure about the second one) and then apply to an International Dental Program in the U.S., not every school has one. During the program, they repeat the last two years of dental school (3 & 4). Once they complete all this schooling and board testing, then they'll become licensed to practice in the U.S.

Get this: the last two years for a foreign doctor cost the same as all 4 years for someone who's getting their dental degree for the first time in the states.
Crazy.
