Got a 498 on my AAMC practice test. I have until 6/14 to reschedule my MCAT. Was planning on applying mostly DO and only one MD school (my state school--I live in a "lucky" state with high in-state bias).

I understand the conventional wisdom is do not take the MCAT before you are ready but if I take it end of July and get score back in August, should I even bother applying to my state MD school? I am a grade-repairer who has managed to squeak my cumulative GPA up to a 3.0 with a good DIY post-bacc showing; the minimum GPA for my state school is a 3.1 so I am above if they consider my recent work.

But I'm fully comfortable with osteopathic med school and I really think I have a better shot at DO anyway because of my low GPA and have a DO letter for my application. If I take the MCAT in late July or August, as I understand it I won't be late for DO schools but definitely not even my state school would look at me, right?

So should I just scrap the shot at my (soooo much more affordable) state school when I know I am marginal anyway GPA-wise and just go for an August/September MCAT and throw it all at DO schools or just take another year? I am 35 and will be 36 and my family is alllllll pressuring me to take the June MCAT and so that sucks as well...thoughts???

I applied in September and am matriculating to my state MD next month!

It’s always worth throwing an app at a state school!

Dont take the MCAT unless you know you will do well

I just rescheduled for July 24...after a search I see my question is like one of 50 of the same, oops...but since many people and adcoms on this site specifically say a late July MCAT is not "too late," that is what I am doing and going ham on the AAMC materials from now on.

Any of them are fine; the DO cycle is longer. But do NOT take the MCAT until you are 100% ready, even if it means skipping a cycle.
EDIT: Tell your family that you're the one going to med school, not them, and also please stop trying to sabotage your medical career out of ignorance.

Update on this: I just took AAMC FL #2 and got a 499. I am supposed to test on 7/24. I feel absolutely crushed but I think I have to take and void. 🙁

Yes, you should void it. Do not score your MCAT until you’re consistently scoring 504+ on your FLs.

Honestly just wait another year. There's no use rushing this if you still haven't broken 500, especially with a low 3.0 gpa.
Take some more classes, bump your grade up and study hard for the MCAT. Take it early next year and apply right when the app opens next May.

The only thing worse than having to apply next year is a unsuccessful application cycle this year and having to apply next year anyway.
