I would greatly appreciate it if someone could clearly explain the LOR timeline. The AMCAS site says that our application data is released to med schools on June 17, but what if our letters are not in by then? Do they even read letters before receiving secondaries? Will they put my app aside until all of my letters come in, or will they judge it using whichever letters they have? If my letters are submitted after June 17, when med schools get my app, will they even read them? Thank you for any answers you are able to provide!

AMCAS will send your primary even if your LORs are MIA.

The schools will send you secondaries after they get your primary even if your LORs are MIA.

You will not be complete with the schools until your LORs are not MIA. Therefore, you will not get an interview invite or be "in the pile" until the LORs are turned in.

Generally, your application is not considered complete at schools until all supporting materials, including the letters of recommendation you have indicated on your secondary application that you are sending, are received. Some schools may review incomplete applications, some may not.

If you submit your primary, not having your letters will not delay schools from sending you invitations to complete secondaries.

So at what point does it hurt me to not have my LORs in?

To my understanding, you want your LOR's in when you submit your secondary, otherwise your application at that school will not be considered complete until those letters come in. So you can turn in your primary, receive a secondary, and turn in your secondary all without the letters, but you will not be placed in line to be reviewed or invited for an interview until the letters come in.

Thanks! You've given me some very helpful answers, and I don't think I have to worry anymore ( =

sorry, i asked this in the right forum but no one responded. does amcas send your primary on june 17th if you're not verified by then? for ex, someone said that if you submit june 1, 10th, 15th you'll be in the first batch (i assume they're talking about june 17th). obviously, if you submit june 15th, you won't be verified by the 17th. maubs, i read somewhere that it took you 4 weeks to get verified, when did you submit yours?

also, what is the ideal date range for all of your LOR's to be in, like...earliest is early july? when do the first interviews get offered?

thanks guys!

On the 17th, if you've submitted by then, schools you have marked on your application will know that you're interested and would, I think, have everything in your file except for coursework. This is confirmed by some schools sending secondary app invitations after I submitted but before I was verified.

I submitted on June 15, but my transcripts were not received until the 28th. My application completed processing on July 16. (So that was just under 3 weeks.)

Fortunately, he's very patient.

yes maubs is very cool. i didn't get a notification that he replied. sorry though maubs!

Does this mean that getting your secondary submitted doesn't matter if your LORs have not been sent?

Hopefully your LOR writers get them in. I had one guy casually wait to upload til the 3rd, but it was still nerve-wracking. Nothing is worst than bugging them to get em in

These forums are awesome for things like this

I have a committee letter and they don't even start writing the letter until the primary is verified. Ugh. This is going to be a long summer...

true dat.

For the most part, your secondary isn't considered complete until they have your LORs. There are a few exceptions (like Ohio State)

Is this also true if I have extra letters listed on my application that will not be in until august? Should I delete one of my listings until I receive that letter?

And will some schools send me secondaries even if they dont have my MCAT score yet?

how long does the process take after submitting to AMCAS via Interfolio. Lets say I send the letters to AMCAS from Interfolio on Day 1. How many days later will they be ready?

1) Many schools' secondaries allow you to specify what letters you will be sending to meet their requirements. If the letter you expect in August is not one of these letters, and assuming the letters you do specify are already available and delivered, then that August letter should not hold up completion of your application. However, at that point I think the policy of what's done with letters received after the fact is school-dependent.

Other schools will determine on their own whether the letters you have sent meet their requirements, without any input from you.

2) Schools that screen secondaries based on MCAT scores will not send you secondary application invitations, but my understanding is that those are few and far between.
