Just a thread for those interested in UMKC

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been shadowing in the clinic several times as well as attending a few programs and interviewing. I absolutely love the atmosphere there. I really feel that everyone is friendly, welcoming, and helpful. All of the students seem incredibly capable and intelligent. They also generally have great things to say about the school. One dentist I know that recently graduated from there said that his class was number 2 in the country for board scores and that UMKC generally is in the top 7. Is there anything specific that you want to know? It is my number 1 choice, so I have tried to get to know it well.

hey futuredds08, I just interviewed with UMKC, when was your interview? Maybe I saw you this past monday? by the way, your sig stats looks very promising...

I think I interviewed the week before you, on the 17th. How was your interview? I thought the whole day was really kind of fun! Thanks, and good luck to you!

is it true they fill the class by dec 1? how many do they interview? its hard as an out-of-state applicant cuz we have to deal with all of the guranteed spots from the in-staters undergrads. same for non-trad in staters also. is it also true that 50% of the class is from the feeder program for undergrads? if so that only leaves 50 seats left, wow.

I just called UMKC today, and they told me that because of my state of residence they couldn't consider me for an interview. They went further to tell me that they won't be considering anyone for an interview that isn't a resident of either Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, New Mexico, or Hawaii. Kind of ridiculous that they told me all this now that I've paid to send my AADSAS application, forward them my DAT scores, and pay their secondary fee. Why don't they just come right out and say it from the get go?

If you are talking about reserved admission, they changed the requirements this year to make it a bit harder to do. Last I heard, they had 30 seats reserved for reserved admission... however, the people that have those seats reserved are not obligated to take them, so if they get into another school that they would prefer to go to, it may open up a few more seats. However, this is still a good chunk of the seats available, so it will be competitive. Last year they interviewed about 230, so I am sure it will be similar this year. That means if you got an interview this year, you went up from a 5% chance of getting in, to about a 33% chance of getting in (assuming you are not reserved admission). It is very hard, and some years impossible to get in as an out-of-state student unless you are from New Mexico, Hawaii, Arkansas, etc. However, it is the same at a lot of other state schools.

You shouldn't have paid the secondary fee until they sent you the supplementary application with the interview invite, unless they send out the supplementary apps differently for out-of-state than they do for in-state. I have heard from many out-of-state applicants that they were told this when they called and inquired about the school before they applied. Did you come visit or contact the school before you applied to ensure that it was worth your time and money to apply?

anyone know how they are sending out there acceptances?

Supposedly they are going to keep the tradition of calling early in the day on the 1st. If you are accepted at this time you will also get a letter that is sent out on the 1st.

In the past they started acceptance calls at 6a.m. However, I received an email from Dr. Killip replying to my question about the time they would call and he said they would call at "the appropriate time" - whenever that is...

The stuff about state residency and agreements with other states has never been a secret. I'm pretty sure it's been on predents for months. They don't request your $35 until they ask you to interview and fill out the LOOOONG secondary. It sucks for all those who aren't from those states - but that's my only "state" school.

They will accept 90% of the class on December 1st.

I interviewed October 8th. UMKC is my #1!! I love this school and the students seem to like it as well.

The Reserved Admission program has about 40 people in it. It just depends on how many people from your state have been admitted. There are a lot of Kansas kids in it already (I don't know numbers). There are 37 spots for MO applicants who are not already in the RA program.

REDSOX - why have you started these threads for multiple schools? Do you really want to go to UMKC?

Good luck to all! Hopefully I will be celebrating on Saturday! Do they serve mimosas at First Watch?

i have started threads for the schools that i am highly considering.

anyone hear anything yet?

Richie called this morning and I got an offer!

Hooray! 😀

I got a call too! Good luck to everyone, and I will see some of you in the fall!

Wait, what? They already called all the accepted people? I thought they weren't supposed to until tomorrow (12/1)... Does that mean I didn't get in? 🙁

4Honor, you said were waitlisted in another thread?

Do you know what your number is yet?

Nope, I sent Richie an e-mail on Friday after 5 pm, so I don't expect a response until Monday anyways. I will call them around 4 pm ish if I don't get an e-mail response though.

The bad news is that for entering class of 2007, everyone who got an offer accepted it, so no one on the wait list got in. 🙁 Are you on the wait list too? Based on your stats, you would ahead of me...

I'll keep you posted if I get a waitlist number.... GL

I was waitlisted last year and I am pretty sure they don't inform the alternates as to what number on the list they are. Also, if I'm not mistaken, they did make only one change for last year.

What do you mean by 'one change'; I'm pretty certain we are all competing for the final 10 slots they reserve for the second round. Good luck on the interview...

This past year (entering class of 2007), no one on the wait list got in, because all offers were accepted. However, the year before that, entering 2006, ~7 people on the wait list were accepted. So, it's really a gamble, hopefully those that were offered will turn down and go somewhere else.

I just talked with Richie today, and he told me that there are only ~10 slots left, if most people accept their offers, and with the 24 people interviewing in Jan, there will be about 80 people competing for the 10 slots. After all 100 slots are filled, they will probably pick 4 - 5 people on the wait list (real one this time), and rank them. If anyone declines offer, they will be picked.

On the other note, I was told that I most likely won't get in this year, so I should just strengthen my app for another year and apply again. 🙁 That just more chances for you all, so good luck!

Congrats to those who have already been accepted for the class of 2012! I'm in the D1 class now. They told us that no one off the waitlist was accepted last year; however, this is untrue due to the fact that at least one of the girls in my class was previously waitlisted. Not sure why the higherups are saying no one got taken off the waitlist. If you guys have questions let me know. I'm not a frequent SDNer, but I'll try my best to get back to you.
