seems like most nontrads on here are women? any single males out there who decided late in life to go back to medical school? or are most of the nontrads out there already in a committed relationship?

Well, I'm 38, male, divorced, trying to go the DVM route...does that count? As best I can tell from the school stats from 2006, I'm the only one who falls into that category! (most DVM apps are <30 and female so >35 and male is exceedingly rare😉)

i guess i fit into that rare category-i am 31, working full time in a strenuous job to support my wife and child. i am studying in the evenings, in prep for the mcat. if all goes well, i would be admitted to med. school at the age of 33, but that is ambitious, as i will have to write the mcat prior to finishing my prereqs. i feel awkward when there are so many non-trads who are actually, in my mind, quite young,(mid to late 20's) with no families to support. anyway, that my story thus far!

I am female, 23 (almost 24) still working at an undergrad degree, still working at a divorce, and working 2 part time jobs while in night school. If all goes (very) well I'll probably be 27 or 28 when I make it into med school.

Female here, but very much single. 🙂 I would wager that most non-trads of both sexes are married/in committed relationships. There is one other student here over age 30 who is single that I know of (also female), but I can't think of any other students of either sex over age 25 who are single offhand.

I'm a (divorced) guy in a committed relationship, but not married. I decided a bit later (after a pretty successful career as an entrepreneur) that there was no time like the present to make it happen. My gf of about 1.5 years is a 3rd year resident. I realized the non-trad thing is actually doable after meeting various non-traditional med-students that she worked with. I had all but written medicine off...and here I am plugging away.

I'm a single guy, 33 years old. I decided two years ago to pursue becoming a medical doctor because I had reached the limits of my ability to promote the wellness of my clients and students, and wanted so much more. Not really a career change as much as a progressive evolution of what I wanted to do; becoming a medical doctor was the next natural step. I just finished 35 credits of pre-med classes without a hitch and took the August MCAT. I'm currently working on my secondaries.

I'm female, 31, but very much single. I'm an unusual nontrad in that I never really had a career either. I had been a figure skater and a dancer until my mid-20s, taking classes but not applying myself, when my money ran out and I ended up working full time for 4 years selling shoes. I had been premed in hs til my jr year when I decided I wanted to be a choir director so my first year of college I was doing that. Hated it. Switched my major a good half dozen times while really just concentrating on dance and skating, then settled on PT for awhile, and ended up premed again. Although given my horrendous past and even some more recent difficulties my main focus right now is just finishing my ugrad and getting into grad school for biophysics. Medicine might still happen someday but right now it's very far away (at least a masters, possibly a PhD, and at least 2 more years of ugrad left).

Now that you mention it, it does seem like the majority of nontrads on here are women. No idea why that is.

24.6 years old. Took 2.5 semesters of college after I graduated HS, but since I wasnt going for anything other than to get out of the dinky town I lived in, I decided to quit wasting time and money and began working full-time for my dad. I've spent the last year getting myself situated to go back to school and get my bachelors and then on to med school. Life is a lot better once you get some direction in it. 😀
