Well, I finally graduated from high-school, and am starting my first semester of college (University of New Mexico) in the Fall. Since UNM doesn't have a pre-dental program/dental school, I'm curious as to what are the courses I need as pre-requisites for dental school. I would like to go to UCLA for dental school, but I have heard that they only accept 3 students per year from New Mexico under the Wicci(sp?) program, so I'm not too sure which I would go to besides that (Although I have noticed Kansas is a very popular choice). What are some other things to do to be a better candidate for dental school? Any info would be greatly appreciated 🙂 .

hey buddy, congrats on graduating from highschool....it doesn't really matter if they have a predent program or not (not that I believe in that anyways), you sort of get to invent your own one, as long as you know the prereqs🙂

1 year gen chem
1 yr Ochem
1yr bio
1 yr physics

pretty much the prereqs for any average major (except the Ochem part)....

then comes the stuff like biochem, microbio, psychobio, all the "good stuff"...whatever your school offers, but something related to those sciences...take a couple of courses of these, and your set....by the way, I'm just saying general things, you really wanna utilize the search link here on SDN🙂

Make sure that you consult with your school catalog and that you are taking the classes that are required for any medical/dental program. For example, they may offer BIO 101 for non-majors or BIO 181 for majors... make sure you take the "majors" course. Also, they offer the courses in a year sequence, like General Chemistry 113, and 114 (1st and 2nd sememster), so take them in sequence. Also, your best bet is to do an internet search on the respective schools you are interested and see what it is they place an emphasis. Make sure you shadow, do extracurricular activities and volunteer. Good luck!!

Hey I just graduated from high school too! 👍
I am also going to be pre-dental, only I am going to college in the southeast (Auburn University). Thank God for this website and message board and I'm so glad I found it so early!! It surely will come in handy in the future.

Thanks guys! 🙂

Two things:

Don't forget those pesky "english classes".... schools vary on what courses will meet this requirement, if they have one at all.

Your GPA, and your Science GPA, are some of your most precious resources. Take both very seriously... but don't be a gunner.... lots of us hate those 🙂

Just want to mention that you are still very young.
Keep ur mind open for all opportunities.
It is good to have a general idea where u will be heading,
but just keep an eye out cos there are many things out there that u can bring to dentistry.
