Has anyone heard of someone who, on a whim, just decided to take the mcat (without preparation) and did pretty well - and then got into med school?

I just think this is pretty funny, because I'm sure it happens - and I'm sure it would piss someone off who focused all of their undergrad on preparing for med school, and doing the whole pre med thing, only to be outperformed by someone who had no idea they ever wanted to take that path.

just curious 🙂

Nope, I do know of someone who hadn't even taken the pre-reqs and made a 28. He did it for fun on a dare.

i know of one person who is very intelligent, didn't really study, and ended up with 40+. that's one in a million type of person.

i ended up prepping for about 2 weeks for my test and was able to get in.

I know someone (via the internet but supposedly it's been verified) who took the MCAT before applying to colleges just for the heck of it and got a 43. it helped on college applications.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who can do this. Just look at your diagnostic scores. I've seen people get around 28-30 on their diags. The only reason it doesn't happen a lot is because no one has the balls to do it.

thats crazy, I wonder if they'll do as well the second time around

Well, I've had a couple older doctors tell me that they didn't study for the MCAT, but I'm not even sure if there were review courses you could take back then, so maybe it's more expected nowadays that people have more preparation.

my feeling about people who don't study and get a 40 is...wouldn't it be great if they studied, think how much they could potentially contribute if they're really that good? it's kind of annoying. I mean, you can do whatever you want, but it seems like a waste.

People that don't care about medicine and get a 40+ on the MCAT are probably alien spies trying to infiltrate our society. Or maybe just really smart people. Or awfully lucky on a multiple choice test.

Seriously though, sitting around 10 hours on a Saturday filling in little bubbles is not my idea of a good time. Perhaps they need a job or something...

I know of someone who did that. Scored a 14 on it I believe. I don't know what they were thinking.

I didn't study specifically for the MCAT. I just took the prerequisites and showed up! 😀

yeah, she's actually a member of SDN and visits quite often. She's a freshmen at college right now at one of the most difficult schools in the nation. she's pretty awesome as she's been taking test her whole life being part of the biology olympiad, math scholar..etc..etc, so i think these types of critical reasoning exams are second nature to her.

oh yeah, it's a 42 not a 43 🙄 hehehe. she's awesome though.

i'm not sure we are talking about the same person. what school is she attending?

umm no..
that would be a waste of money and doesn't show that, the person shouldn't be in med school. there are 21 to 22 year olds who should not be in med school bc they're not ready.

That's me. 42N, actually. 😳

(Test-taking experience is your friend. The MCAT is a very nice kitty compared to some of what's out there...and for the record, I did study. Only three weeks specifically for MCAT, but not nothing.)

I'm still pretty much premed...that score's expiring, so we'll see in a few years. I'm seriously considering a second major in humanities, so that I purge myself of engineer-based writing ineptitude. So maybe my score will look a bit less lopsided...or maybe the ineptitude will hide somewhere else, I don't know.

Oh, and Psycho, I'm at MIT now.

hey kay, not staying up all night for physics again are we? be thankful for P/F policy for freshmans i always say. good luck again.

sidenote: this person is a great contributor to SDN on topics especially related to the MCAT. she might kill me if a rapid influx of members start IM'ng her but she gives great advice for those that have trouble in 'choosing the right answers' - granted that your only problem is being tricked on MCAT style passages. when you know your material and the topics of the MCAT down cold, get some tips from her to grab those last extra points from the questions that purposely try to 'trick you'.

I know someone who did this and got in last year. It's funny because I've been the premed ever since 9th grade when we were at school together. Now that she's in medical school all of my friends tell me that I'm following in her footsteps (They aren't joking either 😡 ). All I can say is it's nice to be able to have a good friend who has already been through the admissions process. I really don't think it matters when you decide to become a doctor, it's the reasons you decide to become one that are important.

Awesome answer...I am using that on my interview! Finally I have something to counter all those who say they wanted to be doctors since the age of 6!
