Just got another job rejection! What now?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know there are already alot of tech/intern job threads on here, and I did use the search function.

My issue: Coming from out of state. Currently work hospital (x last 4 years), before that retail x 5 years. Already sent in forms to be registered pharm tech in my pharmacy school's state. Applied all over, retail and hospital. I would prefer hospital because I wanted to do a residency after I'm done. The retail stores 'might' be hiring in Fall, but nothing yet. Most of the hospital jobs I applied for didn't hire me (no interview). I had a phone interview last week with a major hospital in the area. It was probably the best interview I've ever had, they called my references (all of whom said good things), and the main ICU pharmacist at the hospital I'm applying to (who did her residency under a pharmacist that I work frequently with) called that pharmacist to ask about me. That pharmacist (at my hospital) is now the director of our PGY-2 critical care residency program and even though I did not list him as a reference, said awesome things like, "You definitely want her", "she is so far ahead of the game, everytime we have residency interviews she asks what made a particular candidate stand out over another", "asks excellent questions and is always willing to learn", and finally, my favorite, "we will be actively recruiting her for a residency here". And yet, I still didn't get that job.

Seriously.

I've had multiple people look over my resume and I was accepted to a top 5 school. I participated in multiple organizations during undergrad and even did two years of research. I'm also an RN. What else do I have to do to get a job?

give it some time. i wasnt able to get my first job until late october. just keep re applying and wait, people are always quitting from time to time.

You could get the DoP at the hospital you applied either adopt you or marry you off to a relative of his. Seriously, many times it's people who the DoP knows very well, that get these jobs. Or it could be like my situation last week, where they were going to hire me, but the woman whom I was supposed to replace never left her job because she couldn't find another one.

Just give it some time.

Just keep trying! The economy is terrible, but you sound like you have a lot of experience; as long as your interview skills are good, I'm sure you will be fine.

I came from out of state also but with zero pharmacy experience and eventually found an internship...it helps to be flexible. I would have liked to have found a hospital job, but alas it was not to be.

You have to be lucky. You need to be in the right pace at the right time. You have to open to any possibility (read relocate).

Don't stop believing in yourself. You never know how something is going to work out. It's not good out there. Keep pounding the pavement and sooner or later something will turn up...

I think I know in which job market you are. The hospitals in this area start recruiting for their hospital intern positions late spring. Your best bet right now would be finding a retail position or just keep looking until something more interesting opens up. PM if you have any other questions

Welcome to America! Politics > qualifications. Tho' I am surprised you weren't hired when you had inside connections.😕

How are your letters of recommendation? IMO, those are the most important things when it comes to job hires. Not where you went to school, or if you did research.

Letters of recommendation? For jobs? Moreover, for low-level jobs? I have yet to see a job (other than some faculty positions) that would ask for them/want to see them. It's schools/postdocs who ask for letters of recommendation.

OP, it probably wasn't anything about you, simply the position was no longer available - hiring freeze, or internal reshuffling, or someone already employed begging for extra hours - any number of things. Unless, of course, you simply rubbed someone off the wrong way during the interviewing process, that happens too - just personality mismatch - but then why would they bother with calling all the references?

1) Bad economy
2) It's possible you are scaring employers away with just how over-qualified you are. They might think they have to pay you 50% more than the average tech/intern.

I'm inclined to agree with Farmtastic on point number two. Maybe they cannot pay you what you're worth (intern pay + experience). Have you tried farther out from the area? I heard your state has need in more rural areas. Have you tried smaller clinics?

I would think you might re-try some of those places in the Fall. This is a little late to be looking for a summer job and maybe too early for fall. At many locations internship openings will be seasonal. Spots are most likely to open as students graduate in the spring and go back to school in the fall. When you get declines you might ask if it's worth checking back closer to the start of the school year.

Sometimes schools have intern listings too. You might check your school's website to see if they do.

I'm not saying you should stop looking, just that this is a hard time of year to be looking for an internship.

Ever the contrarian, I disagree for two reasons. First, most interns are paid on a scale. This may not be the case in a hospital setting, but in retail, all 5th year students are paid the same. Secondly, if hiring and staffing is tight (as it presently is) I would be willing to pay a few more shekels for someone who will be more productive, like the OP, who will be able to produce more work more quickly.

Of course, I could be wrong, as there are times business make arbitrary decisions that I think are *****ic.

Why not get a nursing job? You'll learn just as much.

thats just peaches....

they shouldnt bump you.. hurry up and get the paper work done and start working.

Just got a call from the hospital that I interviewed with. Apparently, one of the people that they originally chose did not follow-through and I was next in line, so they offered me the internship!😀 So happy right now.

If that person decides that they do want the internship, they can't reject me again, right?

Why would they? They got jerked around once by this person, why would they take the risk again.

Follow Z's advice. Get your paperwork and start working so they can say to themselves, boy are we lucky we almost got X and we didn't get Peaches84...
