So yes. I am not in my schools SCAVMA chapter for many reasons. But that aside. I just learned today that SCAVMA provides the malpractice insurance students need (do we need it?) in 4th year clinical rotations.

Even if I could stomach re-joining SCVMA, I can't - we need to attend a certain number of meetings and pay dues for two consecutive year sin years 1-3 (so either years 1 and 2 or years 2 and 3). Since I dropped out second year, I cannot essentially re-join. Bollocks. And no one told me this?😕 Yet another reason to despise my school's chapter for being uninformative.

Anyway...is insurance needed for 4th year, and if not through SCAVMA, where can you get it?

In CA the CVMA offered us the insurance. Not sure about other states though. Check with your state VMA

That's exactly why OSU requires that we join SCAVMA, because they provide our insurance. It's a shame they didn't make that clear. I believe for $10 a year you can also be protected if you work in a practice over the summer or part time during the year too.

Ah SCAVMA, the necessary evil... 🙄 We are forced to work at least one football game a year to stay in good standing, so that weekend is coming up next weekend. Fortunately, Mizzou is doing AWESOME so it's pretty cool. Unfortunately, it's at the concession stand so I doubt we get to do any watching of said game.

Maybe they talked about it at one of the meetings you didn't go to.🙂

You do need professional liability coverage because if you're found negligent in a lawsuit you could be held responsible for damages. Many schools cover their students through the university but it sounds like your school doesn't. So you need to ask them what the alternatives are.

I attended almost every meeting first year....I'm just surprised they didn't mention it then. I talked to other classmates and they confirmed that they only learned about it through "word of mouth" from other people. And since I'm not exactly the social butterfly...but anyway. Looks like I shall be insurance shopping 4th year. Oh well. I can put the 200$ or so dollars, plus hours of my time wasted, that I would have spent onn SCAVMA membership towards it (bitter? no.....)

I'm pretty sure that most universities require it for clinics, but you may want to check with your school.

But is such insurance really necessary? As inyou cannot do any clinics without it? Or is it more of a "scare tactic" like life insurance?

That really sucks if they never emphasized the insurance as a major incentive to join SCAVMA... they rattled off the normal list of "perks" for us, the networking stuff, being part of the community, yadda yadda... and then for anyone not quite buying whether or not those perks are really worth it, they threw in and emphasized numerous times the discount you'll get on insurance come third/fourth year.

They explained it as though you can still indeed purchase the insurance through the AVMA, but it's ridiculously more expensive (even if you take into account paying SCAVMA dues each year). They also explained that there is no way a single clinic will accept you for a rotation/externship without you being covered.

They told us that we can join SCAVMA at any time, even if we weren't active members during our first years, but we had to pay back dues plus some crazy late fee per year as well. Maybe you have this option?
